Quote:If our defense is even decent next year and our offense builds off of last year, I would be pretty disappointed if we didn't get into the playoffs. You can't have that much offensive production and still be a bottom-feeder

Playoffs! Mayock is a respected NFL talent evaluator and IMO Jags will continue to improve. However just like last year when we only added 2 or 3 proven NFL quality FA starters too many on this board had expectations that were unrealistic. As season progressed Jags played to their ability not very good compared to league. If DC adds 5 more proven quality NFL FA starters Jags will probably only be average. I have been a STH for 18 years and look forward to the continued 4th year of improvement for our Jags. But stop the playoff talk until we prove it with quality play when games matter towards the end of next season. BTW last year was aberration as far as earning a spot in playoffs. Which was proven by our conference champ getting blown out in their one and done playoff appearance.
Come On Caldwell.  Get Jackson, Mack, and the best db on the market.

Eh I don't think the expectations were unrealistic for last year. I think most everyone had them pegged at right around 8 wins. Had Marks and Fowler been available I think we would have at least gotten to 7. No reason to think we can't excel once the d gets fixed. We have a playoff bound offense already.
Heck, even without Fowler and Marks available, had we simply mastered the shotgun snap and placekicking, we'd have reached 7-8 wins.

Quote:Yes, if you had read the subject title you would have known that it was in fact Mike Mayock that said playoffs.

Nicely done. Love ya JW
Nice ^^^
Getting Fowler back will be like having 2 first round draft picks in 2016. Couple that with a 2nd and 3rd rounder and we will possibly have 4 new starters next season.

Are you saying there should be no excuses for the Jags if they don't have a breakout season next year?
Quote:We let a lot of games we should have won get away from us this last year. That would have most likely put us in the playoffs. So, it's not as far-fetched as some would think. However, it all depends on our defense this year. If we can make leaps and bounds like the offense did last year, then it could happen!

GO JAGS!!
It's true we let a lot of games get away from us this past season that would've made the difference in making the play offs. Now having said this, keep in mind just how abysmally bad many of those teams were to whom we lost. Remember how handily the tin horns put us away... not once, but twice; yet when they played the first 'real' play off caliber team, they looked pathetic! That should tell you just how bad and how far away from being 'legit' the Jags actually are.

No, we still have a long way to go before we are a true 'play off caliber' team. Any thoughts to the contrary are delusional. We had another losing season this past year and that against many teams who were struggling. Obviously, any upgrade to our defense can only help; the problem is that our defense is so bad that it will take more than a single season to upgrade it enough to make a significant difference. I'm not being 'doom and gloom' here... but I'm not into blowing 'sunshine' up anyone's skirt either. Wake up! We were near the bottom of the worst division in the NFL... which is to say we are near the bottom in the NFL. What does 'Vegas say our chances are of making a super bowl run this season? Right.

We're still at least two more years out of being legit contenders... and that's if we are able to get good picks and help from f/a.

Uh no... most everyone did not have them pegged for at least eight wins. The more realistic expectation was at least 6 wins; and as pathetic as that seems (especially given the comparatively soft schedule and the inexplicable amount of lucky breaks they got) they we're unable to even reach that! As it is right now, we only have about 1/2 of a team. We have no legitimate defense at all to speak of! We do have parts of a decent offense now; a quarterback, receivers, and a running back. We still lack a decent line however, especially on the left side. Unless addressed, Bortles will get seriously injured, expect it.

The improvement on our offense was bought at the price of the neglect of our defense. We're paying the price as a result. The 'D' can be fixed (given the commitment is made to get decent coaching) but it will take time; at least a couple of more seasons.
Oh, I love February.

Can someone with time on their hand dig up posts from last February too? I could use some entertainment on this windy Thursday.

"It's Cooper or bust. Can we really rely on Hurns? ARob is injury prone and Blake needs a real #1 or he will suck"

Vic Beasley is the best pass rusher.

Beasley was also coveted on twitter as well to a ridiculous degree! It was not unlike Teddy B was the year prior. They sniff out a prospect and then collectively place their foreheads together to lock it in. Anyway, good find.
