Quote:Helluva cover corner and arguably the best defender in Jaguars history. It's unarguable that he was the best at his position in franchise history. Mathis was always humble and gave back to his community. With his retirement I thought it might be worthwhile to look back at his tenure here. I'll never forget his games against the Steelers.

Does any Jaguar that made it to the Pro Bowl qualify for the Pride?  I agree that CB Mathis was a fantastic corner for the Jaguars, and overall good guy that was liked.

I guess I don't really understand the purpose of the Pride.

I mean I feel that the HOF standards even fell a bit.

I am a big fan of Mathis so I am bias towards saying yes, but at the same time I'm against putting too many players in the pride.  If you allow Mathis you open it up to allowing many other good/great players that arent HOF worthy but did a job in Jacksonville.... i guess I am also looking long term.

The expansion franchise has a young history compared to other franchises in the NFL but if the Jaguars draft Jalen Ramsey as a corner who knows maybe he would go to multiple Pro Bowls and dwarf Mathis records.

Jimmy Smith will be in waaaaaay before Rashean Mathis.

To me Mathis falls in the same category of players like Kevin Hardy, Tony Brackens, Leon Searcy, MJD, DD and Daryl Smith.

Very good players. Some Pro Bowls.

But the Pride is for players that are on the cusp of the Hall of Fame.

Brunell is the exception. He led the Jags to 4 playoff appearances, a couple Pro Bowls, a Pro Bowl MVP when the Pro Bowl use to mean the best players in the conference. He was also the face of the Franchise for a brand new expansion team. He was compared to Steve Young. So he is the exception. He also passed for 4300 yards back when teams ran the ball and stopped the run. Brunell made huge plays in the playoffs, especially that scramble against Denver when that team upset Buffalo AND Denver in the same playoff run. So Mark deserves his spot. Anybody that disagrees just wasn't apart of that 90's team or wasn't old enough. But us fans that sat in the stadium when the team plane flew over us understands why Brunell is in the Pride.

Rashean Mathis will be in the discussion for the Pride but he will never get in. He was just a really good player, but not elite and on the cusp of HOF.

This is my thinking too. We can't just go filling the Pride up with players that had a couple good years. I don't even think Stroud and Hen get in.

Boselli, Taylor, Smith, McCardell were on another level. They are HOF type players.

I've already explained Brunell. It was all about the playoffs for his credentials.

But I agree with what you said. We can't just water our Pride down with real good players. It needs to be reserved for elite players. Guys that changed the entire franchise.
Personally, the Weavers take up too much room....

Quote:If Mathis goes in then so does DD, MJD, Brackens

I see no problem with this. The Pride isn't Canton.
For me the criteria for entry to The Pride should be people who played a key role for us for an extended period of time both on the field and off. I have no idea what the criteria is but I would include Mathis,MJD,DD,Brackens and Meester as members of the pride.

No rush to include people though as more candidates will emerge as the years go by (Blake,ARob,Telvin,Hurns???)
I love Rashean, he's been an excellent Jaguar. That said, it's not the place for very good players - it should be reserved for the truly exceptional imho and that means he shouldn't get in.

To me if I had to put players into the Jaguars Pride it would be

OT Tony Boselli - Nominated for the HOF

RB Freddy Taylor - should be considered for the HOF

==================================

Then I would have to seriously consider;

RB Maurice Jones-Drew - The way he would block, catch, run, return, he was a great player on & off the field for the Franchise & still talks positive of the team to this day.

Great players but off field problems

WR Jimmy Smith- if you take away the crime/prison I would think he would be an obvious addition to the Pride, but why add embarrassment to the team to the non-fans that would read about it?

The problem with Jimmy is the off field stuff, but who knows in a few years of looking back at Allen Robinson & Allen Hurns & (maybe Lee) a lot of fans might forget about McCardell & Smith accomplishments  (well maybe McCardell's)
One of my favorite players, would like to see he him in the pride, but I understand if he does not make it.

I think DD should be there.

Mathis was good, certainly the best the Jags have ever had at that position (so far). He also does have the distinction of being from the J'ville area. That being said, was he really regarded as being all that good on a league wide level? I'm inclined to think that the 'pride' should be reserved for the players who took us to the AFC play off game. I'm not at all inclined to include MJD as I belive he was more about himself than the team as witnessed by his 'hold out'... I'll never forget or forgive that; It's not just about stats. As fans, we're far too inclined to want to include (and exclude) players based on personal favoritism, myself included.

It's like an earlier poster said; Mathis was good... but he wasn't really on the 'elite' level that Taylor, Boselli, Smith, or McCardell were.

I am actually very curious to see where future Pride players go. They are quickly running out of room on that strip of stadium.

They just make the lettering smaller and redo the entries.
no

Did Mathis mean as much to this franchise as the guys already in the ring?  I don't think so.  He was very good during his time here, but pride-worthy?  Nope.

At the rate they're being added, I don't think that's going to be a problem.  When they run out of space on one side of the stadium, they can find locations on the east side of the bank.

Tell me....why Meester?

Exactly where I'm at.

It would be nice to have a Hall of Fame or a Wall of Honor around the stadium to recognize the very good players that have played here, but who aren't worthy of being in the Pride. There are plenty of players like McCardell, Brackens, Meester, Stroud, Henderson, Mathis, Scobee, Daryl Smith, and Greg Jones among others who have done enough for this franchise to warrant some sort of recognition.

Up here, Green Bay has a Hall of Fame that 1-2 very good former players get inducted into every season, but only the true greats get their names placed inside the stadium. Something like that would be nice to have in Jacksonville.

They already do that throughout the building with those painted walls of pro-bowlers. I mean, Montell Owens has made it thanks to his two Pro Bowl appearances.

Na. You either make the pride or you get a poster up in the stadium around here.

But I agree with what you said about the pride.

Only the elite get in...

Could you imagine Boselli, future HOF

Taylor, Possibly HOF

Smith, possibly HOF

And then.......Rashean Mathis
