Quote:Oh, and for the record, I have heard of people saying that young black students who study are called names such as Uncle Tom etc, but I myself, and my friends who taught in the Jax inner city, do not recall this being a prevelant thing in our classes. As a matter of fact, I would venture to say that my inner city students were significantly more inclusive and accepting of each other than my suburban students (who for the record aren't that bad either)
My wife is black and did well in school before going on to get a B.S. in chemistry and nursing. She caught a ton of crap from other black folks who thought she was being "white". It is a stupid cultural things in certain communities. This was all in WV.

I don't know if or when you attended college, but all those things you say don't help you financially help you become a more insightful, inquisitive person.

For example, one thing I learned from a political science professor is how to distinguish between noise and reality. Sure, a black congressman may have said something like what you posted, but the reality is the overwhelming majority of African Americans disagreed.
I went in the Army after high school and that gave me plenty of situations to learn to become insightful and inquisitive. This was back in the early 90's, right after Desert Storm and pre-9/11, so it was a different time socially, politically and pretty much everything else. I can't think of a better place (the military) to get a full diverse life education without being brainwashed by professors- whether liberal or conservative.

In the military you have no political, social, racial, religious, etc, opinion while in uniform. You have your job and all it entails. At least that's how it's supposed to be but not always how it is. There is no one that is going to force any ideals down your throat. They'll force a lot of things, but not ideals. That's not been the experience of many of my friends who have been to college. They have/had professors throwing all kinds of stuff in their curriculum that shouldn't be there because to educate is not to tell someone your opinion but the facts or history. Too much opinion is being thrown about and it's distorting the truth and the facts and soon will distort history.
Quote:Barrack obama was said not to be "black enough" in a macro sense black has been defined as poor and unable to perform certain tasks by... You guessed it.. Black people.
I remember that. The folks I worked around at the time were happy a black man was finally in office but he wasn't black enough. I was like- what? I didn't even bother to ask what that meant. I do know after the initial 'high' in the community wore off a lot of them started complaining that he was just like all other politicians and wasn't going to do for them what they thought he would do. I'm not sure what they were expecting.

I haven't expected much from any POTUS who has been in office since I could first vote in 1990. I guess I'm just jaded that way. They all lie to get what they want and we the people don't matter and we haven't in a long time.

Interesting, what you say about your friends who have been in college is similar to what I've heard from friends and family in the military, especially when it comes to a topic we can't discuss here.

Admittedly, I attended college in the early 80s, but I experienced nothing like what you described. If anything, I learned to open my mind to various points of view.
I went into STEM and so did most of my buddies. Obama is plenty black enough I think.

I think we can both agree that college in the 80's and the military in the 90's were very different than they are now. Society in general is very different now than even a decade ago. I feel we would both have very different experiences now than we did then.

I can only speak to my experience. Like yours about college, my insights into the military are anecdotal from family and friends. I don't know if these crazy stories we hear about silly campus protests and senses of entitlement are anomalies or the norm. What I do know is I'm a better person for having attended college, and I firmly believe we are a better nation and society if we have many people as possible receiving a well rounded college education. The same goes for military service.
