The defense is struggling because we do not have the players to run the scheme.

Dave Caldwell says finding a good FS is harder than a franchise QB. Elite safety play is critical for this defense to work.

Why not do the simple thing and change the scheme?  Instead of forcing a square peg in a round hole why not just build a square hole?

Free agency and the draft will give us round pegs. It is much simpler to get the right players than make all of them learn a new scheme.
So we have ten square pegs in square holes. And rather than looking for the eleventh, we should scrap the whole thing for round holes?

Genius! Can't believe they didn't think of that.
I was always a fan of Legos instead of the shape hole game.

Best answer: Because the English language forbids it.

They didn't. This team needs at least 5 starters on defense to run that scheme and it's already been solved by offensive coaches. It's a waste of time.

Here's the thing. No defense can survive with bad players. You can change it all you want but then in some other defensive scheme a deficiency will appear and then we are back to square one. The focus just needs to be on acquiring quality players.

Because than you have to admit to the owner that your innovative, new and improved, "scheme" was really just a waste of time.  You'll never have a quality defense without quality players.

Ding ding ding!
The scheme sucks and the guy who wants to implement it does too. Otto, Leo, hall of famer free safety needed to play a scheme, man just go get talent and quit the crap. We passed on Tyrann Mathieu because they're scared of players with past problems because the front office and coaching staff isn't strong enough to straighten them out, and ended up with Cyprien who's a bust. Good possibility Blackmon remained a junkie because of soft Gus always coddling players and not telling them to get in gear. He's a weak coach living off of being liked by fans and players because they really don't have to perform in this system and it's all good.

A great Head Coach develops a game plan/scheme with the talent he/she has available, so yeah I agree... it is a head scratchier that the owner is continuing with GM Dave Caldwell's approach but I guess he has a lot of faith in his expertise (after all we are only kinder-gardeners).

Seattle's defense got solved?   News to me.   Maybe you better take a look at the stats before you say that.  Seattle was 2nd in the NFL in total defense this year, and 2nd overall in total defense in the playoffs as well.   Doesn't look like anyone solved them yet.

Man I bet you have the most interesting theories on aliens, who killed Kennedy, and other topics of the conspiracy theory nature. Blackmon stayed a drunk because Gus was too soft?! You're on a whole different level of crazy my friend.

Because this would be too straight forward and obvious a solution. Oh yes... and it would highlight the failure of the HC (the defensive genius) to show his ability to work with what he has... which would highlight the failure of the GM in selecting such a HC.

I believe the analogy would be more correct to say that we have 10 oval pegs trying to fit into round holes and one square peg; but the point is that we don't have the right people to run Gus's defensive style. Never did and probably never will. In view of that, why is there such a stubborn determination to remain with a defensive look that everyone knows we don't have the talent on the field to run?

Hey, how good are the Jags and Falcons at it? The Panthers put how many points on the Seahawks? Yeah, it's a known scheme that doesn't work without a ton of upper tier talent. The Jags are wasting their time with it.
I have to post in this high quality thread.

What scheme thrives without upper tier talent?

How many points did the Panthers score on Denver? Maybe we should switch to a 3-4.

Oh.. well, we'll still need Miller, Ware, Talib, Harris Jr, Roby, Trevathan.......

Exactly, the Jags don't have the guys to play the scheme they are trying to force and by the time the figure it out the league will have moved on.

We don't have the talent to play ANY scheme.   It's not the "Seattle scheme" that's holding us back.  It's the PLAYERS.  Get some players, and the scheme, any scheme, will work.
It's a lack of pass rush
