Suppose free agency not only nets you the pass rusher or two you crave, but also a S (Berry, who you believe can play free).
Come draft day, the Jaguars are on the clock at pick 5, and the FSU DB Jalen Ramsey is on the board.
Having signed the FS the defense needs in Berry, do you double up on DBs with Ramsey?
Why or why not?
At this point I'm not sure.
On the one hand, I think Ramsey is a heckuva prospect, and I think he could actually play CB. If you believe certain positions are a premium, taking him as a CB should certainly be justified. His selection would give us all kinds of depth and flexibility in the secondary. If we put him in at CB, we'd have at least one good press corner. If you put him in at FS, move Berry to SS, then we have all of the talent and range we could possibly need at those two positions. We could finally play the back end of the defense properly.
On the other, I think with the addition of Berry, the secondary would be "good enough" if not perfect. But there are other areas of need on the team. The DL could use more talent inside and outside. LB could use help, and the last game of the season shows that Luke Joeckel is far from a sure thing at LT.
Assuming we got the pass rushers in free agency, I might still take Ramsey at 5.
That would be a conundrum wouldn't it?
If you feel you've addressed it in FA and then he's sitting in your lap, potentially THEN you try to trade that pick? However, if he's truly the transcendent player we keep hearing, you take him and create a heckuva competitive atmosphere.
Me: I'd take him.
How is he graded compared to the rest of the players on Caldwell's board? If he's far and away the best player, I grab him. We should have the safety/DB position locked up for a while.
If he's slightly above, I'm going to shop the pick if I can. If he's about the same as a LB/DE (e.g. Jack), I take the LB/DE.
I'd still take Ramsey, play him at FS and plug Berry in at SS. Cyp is relegated to backup.
Dave's best case scenario would be to sign enough FA's so that we have no pressing needs come draft time and he can draft BAP. IF Ramsey is your BAP, then take him.
theres a lot of what if in this thread. Can we save these until after the free agency period and before the draft.
Lastly not sold on Ramsey
With the assumption that pass rushers and safety has been well addressed in free agency, I would be between Ramsey to upgrade corner and provide secondary flexibility, and Jack to deliver another needed playmaker in the defense.

I don't know if I would trade that pick.
Even if I decided I was okay with Berry & Cyprien, I would be inclined to stay put and maybe take a T or a LB before dealing down.
I would have to be overwhelmed with an offer before dealing down.

You're Caldwell. Tell us. :-)
You get a pass rusher in the draft

That would be a good scenario.
But if you are Dave and the scenario unfolded the way I posted (pass rush and FS now okay, but LT and LB may be an issue) what do you do at 5?
Quote:Is Ramsey a FS or CB?
That is the question.
You are Caldwell...what do you think?
Keep in mind what you said about free safeties with range. Keep in mind the importance of the press corner.

Lastly not sold on Ramsey
Admittedly there ARE a lot of what ifs.
Why not sold on Ramsey? Not sold on him as a player, not sold on him as a CB, not sold on him as a FS, not sold on him as worth the #5 overall pick. not sold there aren't bigger needs...what?

Probably go Myles Jack.
Well, since Berry has been playing almost exclusively SS for his entire career yes I would take Ramsey at 5 for FS and have an outrageous safety combo.

This. Saftey fixed.
We are gonna get a good look at a bunch of nice safeties at the Senior bowl, I doubt Ramsey is gonna be so far and away above those guys that he is a must.
Some of you guys are acting like Ramsey is this once in a generation safety prospect, he's good but come on its other players worth the 5th pick

I wouldn't trade it, but if he were available and they felt like they've addressed the need at FS, they may end up with a windfall of picks. I'm always for getting a top 5 talent.

I think you're missing the broad purpose of a message board.
Instead of getting your panties in a wad over hypothetical questions, why don't you just ignore and let others discuss.
