I should have been more clear. The next player the Jags selected, with their second pick in that draft, was a teammate of Marcedes. I'm sure you know who it was.

Shack got the boot for first round busts.  He was good in the later rounds.  They just had some wanky historically bad thoughts in the first round.  The 2008 draft sealed it because we weren't "close" and a pass rusher away from victory.

 

I appreciate the David Caldwell approach and plan for establishing a method and following it.  When you build an identity and set goals you don't get blown around by work out wonders and combine measurables.

... I don't know about all the extraneos jazz you guys are talking about. All I know is that Mercedes Lewis has only ever had one or two decent seasons out of the entire time he has worn a Jags uniform. He has not been a very good TE comparatively speaking; it's as simple as that. I don't personally share the attitude that just because he was kept here for way too long he deserves to retire a Jag. I find that more of an indictment of how poor our leadership has been for years for not cutting ties with him than of any lingering memory of ML being a player of much worth.

 

To be allowed to retire a Jag, you should have been a notable asset to the team, not just a guy who, for the most part, just showed up and collected a check. He has been and will undoubtedly continue to be more of a liability than an asset. Those who support his being 'allowed' to stay here and retire aren't really thinking in terms of football in my opinion, but more out of soggy, misplaced sentimentality regarding ML. He does not deserve that honor, but then again, he should have been cut long before now too IMHO. He is not unique, I suppose, in that he will be allowed to retire here even though he didn't really do much to positively distinguish himself while here.

 

Perhaps I wouldn't be inclined to view his retiring here so negatively if he had been cut and he played out his final years elsewhere and then allowed to be re-inducted for one day to retire a Jag, not unlike Mark Brunell or others. The fact that such a low performing TE was allowed to stay here this long just speaks volumes about how far this team has fallen.

Don't know how many NFL players you've blocked in your life but, I gotta think it's a little harder than "collecting a check".

Marcedes is like the new Kyle Brady. I wouldn't mind if Lewis retires a Jag. Not like he will be inducted into the Pride.

The answer to your query is zero, but that has no relevance to my observation. ML has been a 'serviceable' blocker as a TE. The problem is that the primary function of a TE is as a receiver , not as a blocker. Obviously, they do block and it is an important part of what they do... but it isn't the prime function; if it were, we would be far smarter to draft tackles and just stick a TE jersey on them.

 

It's true that it isn't his fault that we haven't had a real outstanding tackle since the guy has been here. But that has proven to be a career saving thing for him, otherwise, he really wouldn't have much use here at all. The good teams have TE's that are good receivers... ML isn't and seldom ever has been. 'Nuff said.

I don't have the stats to refer too, but I'm under the impression that Kyle Brady was a considerably more proficient receiving TE than ML ever thought about being. Plus Kyle could run, while ML always looks like a new born giraffe when (on rare occasion) he catches the ball.

 

But like I said, I don't have the stats in front of me so maybe I'm wrong about one being 'better' than the other.

Watching Lewis run is entertaining. I've always wanted to go to the African safari.


I remember Brady as a great blocker, but bad hands. Brady did run like a tank though. I'm sure Lewis' 10 TD season was the most prolific season by a TE in Jaguars history.

Lewis has more yards, more TD's and a higher YPC in 10 seasons (144 games) than Brady had in 13 seasons (197 games). And while watching Lewis run is highly entertaining I can clearly recall a few plays where he wasn't tackled until the third or fourth man.
