I'm gong to use simple math.

You normally need about 10 wins to secure a playoff birth.  The Jags won 5 games.  So I would say half way there?

I know the NFC East and AFC South were terrible, but they were won by 9-7 teams. Ten wins often are required to clinch a wild card spot.

You can also use simple math to see how close we were to winning five more games.
Am I missing something?

Man, we've got some playmakers on offense...something we haven't had since the glory days of Brunell, Fred, Jimmy, and Keenan. In 2007, Garrard was good and Mojo was fantastic, but we still didn't have the weapons we have now...and I haven't even mentioned Yeldon and Julius Thomas.

We don't need to completely overhaul our defense. With Fowler, Marks, and Telvin and another good linebacker and pass rusher, we could have a dominant front seven. That's the key to Carolina's defense--their cornerbacks are nothing special.

Add those key pieces, keep everyone healthy, and we can make the playoffs.

The offense struggled at the start of the season (to be fair the franchise had a new OC with a new playbook) and new players on offense (one of which got injured during Preseason TE JT and missed over a quarter of the season).

The WR duo dropped a few passes and struggled to get open at times, and the rookie RB was picking up blocks while the LT Luke Joeckel struggled and fought thru injuries.

The offense really got into rhythm towards the end of the season but the Defense remained horrible especially against the pass.  The question is HC Gus Bradley a winner.  That is a tough question that the fan base including myself has given him tons of credit (that he hasnt really proven yet winning only a quarter of the games for 3 straight seasons at some point excuses run out winners win its what they do).  This is a make it or break it season for Gus (many thought last season was, but the heat has to be on this year with him promoting his best friend to DC did he do enough to fix the problems on Defense)?

We will have to wait and see but its make it or bust 2016 despite the extension and i think its up to GM Dave Caldwell to have Gus win too since he stuck with him for four straight years.
I always knew last year was not 'make it or break it." Shad Khan made it very clear he will not fire Gus Bradley either during or after the season. Why should he do that before the roster rebuild is complete? Until we have enough talent to get an AFCS title with good coaching, it is not fair to say just because our record is bad Gus Bradley should be punted. However I would not be surprised if 2016 is a "make it or break it" season because we will have more talent on defense, plus a few upgrades on offense and hopefully a good kicker.

IDK about you, but the Jags are only missing 4 or 5 wins to make the playoffs.

Truth.

Even with arguably the softest schedule this past season in the NFL, and with a large amount of inexplicable 'lucky breaks' for the Jags due to other teams misfortunes... even with this, the best this team could do was only a weak 5-11 record. Yes, we will get some player upgrades this coming season (we hope)... but we will also have a substantially harder schedule this coming season too.

No. The tinhorns proved we were not even close by soundly whipping us. They themselves then went on to get soundly and easily beaten in the first playoff game. We have been and continue to be a bad team; I see us needing at least two more years of developing our defense from the dumpster fire it has been until it is at least respectable. As it is right now, our defense is a joke to any halfway decent team in the NFL and our offense, while getting better, isn't good enough most of the time to compensate for it.
I'm trying to not be pessimistic, but the first thing I thought when i saw this thread was "You have to be kidding".

I would love to be wrong, I really would, but I think we're heading backwards next year and not anywhere near the playoffs. Because Gus and Because Defense.

Feel free to roast me if Gus leads us to a nine or ten win season and I'll take it all season with a smile and good humor.

The only reason to be pessimistic is our 2016 schedule. Our defense will get much better in March (free agency) and April (the draft). That is after Sen'Derrick Marks and Dante Fowler return to practice at 100%. How can we take a step backwards with all of the upcoming improvements on defense?

No... again, there are more reasons than just the schedule to be pessimistic about the 2016 season. For starters, you are assuming that free agency and draft acquisitions will make the team 'much better'. In fact, the history of this team shows that rookies seldom help the team very much in their rookie season. This team also has a well established history of let downs from free agency. So your assumption that the draft and free agency will get our defense 'much better' is baseless.

Dante Fowler will be playing his rookie season this year; again, it is the exception for rookies to step in and have a big positive impact right away. Generally, they require at least a year or two before they start becoming productive. There are exceptions to this of course, but generally that's the way it goes. We don't know what to expect from Marks...maybe he'll play well...maybe he won't. I sure wouldn't go betting your savings on him being an impact player now though.

Certainly, the team is going to put forth maximum effort to improve the defense. But guess what... every other team in the NFL is also going to be trying to improve their defense too if they can. All we can hope for next season is that we will have hopefully stopped wasting time on guys on defense who have demonstrated that they are a waste of time on the Jaguars roster. We will have some new people here via f/a and the draft who need to step in right away and start developing and show us what they can do.

...but it ain't gonna happen in the course of just one off season. We're that bad and in that deep of a player 'hole' on defense. Give it a year or two...then we'll see. I personally don't think Gus ever had a chance here as the Jags never had the personnel on the field to successfully run Gus's defense. He will be gone before that happens (if ever). He'll make a decent defensive coordinator some where else, but he was just too inflexible about the defense here to be an effective HC.

Sprinkles is the ultimate reason to be pessimistic about the Jaguars. As long as he's here the team will underperform and fail to reach it's potential.

Not true. Gus Bradley was our coach in 2015 and we showed a lot of improvement on offense. That cannot be disputed. It also cannot be disputed that this team is still in rebuilding mode, so upgrading positions - especially on defense - can show continued improvement on the field. Nothing anyone else says can convince me it is Bradley's fault that we have a talent problem. That falls on Gene Smith.
