I'll apologize ahead of time for this not (likely) being a quality thread. In fact, the title pretty much says it all.
This Oline sucks, has sucked, and looks like it's likely to -for the most part- suck in 2016. When I look at the Cleveland Browns, I see a rebuilding team with two veteran and former pro bowl offensive lineman that are there to be had.
Mind you, we have a potentially dominant QB, who's been the most sacked guy for the last 2 years.
Would you trade a 2nd round pick for Joe Thomas and persuade Alex Mack to sign with us for 10 mil per year? They're both around 30-31 years old, but I've long believed that offensive line is a position where you can be productive until a player's mid 30's.
I'll be honest, I'm all for it.
Mack for 10 mil a year?
I'd pass (due to $$$)
I'd definitely do it. Anything not involving Joeckel I'm for.
The Browns won't come off of Joe Thomas for anything less than a first. Joe has a year or two left in him.
Alex Mack will be overpaid by someone and is damaged goods. He got ragdolled far too often this season and made some really dumb mistakes. Mack would step on the left guard's foot while trying to chip their man. As a result, the LG would be off balance and get put on their [BLEEP]. He did it to Bitonio and later Cam Erving. It was horrible.
Please, for the love of god, listen to this man

Alex Mack is no good anymore. Lets just not entertain it at all and find a center elsewhere.
We have money to burn, and this coaching staff is on a red hot seat. If Dave wants to save Gus, he has to do something drastic.
I don't think either of those guys are long term fixtures, but I think they'd be better than just about any other option for 2016. I think they both would make this a playoff caliber oline for 2016.
I wouldn't be ok with a 1st for JT, but at 13 million a year for a rebuilding team, I'd bet the farm they'd take a top 10 2nd rounder for a 30 year old lineman.
I think we should try again to sign Alex Mack. How could anyone not want a Pro Bowler at that position? We have had terrible centers the last two years because the Browns could afford to match our offer sheet.
Trading our second round pick for anybody would be a huge mistake. I have opposed that idea since the 2010 draft, when we did not have a second round pick and were unable to find a trade partner to get one by trading down in the first round. Imagine how much better our defense would have been if we had drafted Sean Lee (the guy Gene Smith wanted to pick in round 2) and did not have Derek Cox. It is obvious to me our second round pick should not be traded away for any player when we have so many holes on defense - one of them being a linebacker because we missed out on Lee.
There were several teams who thought they would be in contention who were offered a first at the trade deadline for Joe but he made it impossible to iron out the details. If they decide to move him out in the off season, a team will offer a late first rounder.
Sticking with Wiz and drafting a mid round center is a sensible option. Overpaying Mack to get the same or potentially worse results than Wiz is mind blowing.

He got in there on name familiarity alone. If the people voting had watched his performance over the season, Mack would not have made it into the pro bowl.

Why would sticking with the player who single-handedly cost us a win over the NFL's worst team make sense? The same thing happened the next week too. We can't have any more snaps over Blake's head. Wiz sucks. He is not a good blocker either.
I like the idea of adding a guard in FA and moving Cann to center

So the rational response is to pay $10 mill a year to a revolving door just because it is something different?

Who said we have to pay him $10 million per year?

Because there will be teams willing to pay him big money to underperform. The Jags will have to overpay to get the privilege of seeing him shrug after getting tossed three yards into the backfield.
Drafting a center or doing some shuffling on the line would be a smarter bet.

You don't know what other teams even want him. Only the Jaguars were interested when the Browns slapped the transition tag on him.

Shuffling the line would not help us. We really need to draft a center.

Other teams were offering picks to the Browns before the deadline for Mack at his inflated salary. He had it written into his contract that he gets final trade approval. He killed the deal.
So the want is there. Hopefully Caldwell does his homework and somebody else picks him up.

When I read Alex Mack exercised the no-trade option, I thought maybe he changed his mind about the Jaguars and wants to stay in Cleveland. Or did he just not like the teams that were offering him a job?
I wonder why more players don't have a no-trade option in their contracts. Mack's contract is the only one I am aware of that has it.
Ok fine. Let's ASSUME the browns would take our 2nd round pick for Joe Thomas, and we had already signed Alex Mack. Then would you do the deal?
I know it's weird, but I kinda want both of those guys or neither of them. I'm not the GM though, so I'm allowed to be cray like that.
