We should have.. But our GM is not a winner as well.

Yeah, but then there was this guy named Tom Brady who seemed to lack some of the measurables, and he turned out okay.  If people had just paid a little more attention to actual game tape and how he performed under pressure in college, maybe he would have been drafted a little bit higher.

Of course, the 49ers, the sainted Bill Walsh and Steve Mariucci, ignored Tom Brady and went for the guy with all the measurables: big, strong, fast, threw the ball 100 miles an hour and that guy was Giovanni Carmazzi, who sounds like the opera singer in Naked Gun ("Hey look!  It's Giovanni Carmazzi!")   We all remember Giovanni Carmazzi, right?   No, I didn't think so.   He got hit a couple of times in preseason, and he just mentally shut down and never played a regular season game.   He's a goat farmer now.  Look him up.

This is a great show.  Watch this.  The part about Giovanni Carmazzi starts at 14:27

DeShaun Watson got the holy crap beat out of him in the first half against Alabama, and he got right back up and kept playing at a high level in the most pressure packed situation imaginable.  That should tell you something very very important about the guy.   Actually, he did that two times.

I never brought up measurables.  Watson stares down receivers and makes bad reads.  People are all over him because how he finished college, when he has at best a 2nd round grade on him.

You simply cannot pick Watson without firing Caldwell first.

You're comparing a college QB who stares down every route to the Goat, that's madness. Brady is an outlier in every way. For every Tom Brady, how many crappy QBs won national champtionships? How many Danny Wuerfells? How many Weinke's? Josh Heupal? Ken Dorsey? Craig Krenzel? Matt Mauck? Matt Leinart? Vince Young? Chris Leak? Matt Flynn? Tim Tebow? Greg Maclrow? The only college qb I can even think of that won a national championship and turned out to be worth anything in the last 15 years is Newton.

You obviously can't draft on measurables alone and you can't draft on resume alone. Even when a player has all those things, sometimes they still turn out badly. There are serious questions about how Watson's game would translate to NFL and that's a big reason why there isn't a consensus about where he will get drafted, but nobody serious is talking about him at #4. I think a team might take a shot on him somewhere in the first round, but I think he is a 2nd or 3rd round prospect. He is too raw and developmental at this point.

I understand what you're saying, and I'm not going to argue with you.  QB is the hardest position to project from college to the NFL.   For every Tony Romo, there's a Tim Couch.   For every Blaine Gabbert, there's a Dak Prescott.  That's why I think nobody really knows how Watson would do as a pro quarterback.  Not you, not I, not even the so-called experts.

It's just amazing that, with all the millions and billions of dollars riding on success or failure, no one has figure out how to tell which of these college QBs is going to be a good pro QB.

Quote:You simply cannot pick Watson without firing Caldwell first.
Yeah in the fantasy world where we draft a QB at 4, if Dave was given the chance at two QBs it would pretty much guarantee were totally inept.
Quote:I would like to know exactly how that was measured.   Is there a drill at the Combine that just measures velocity?   Do they tell the QBs, "ok guys, throw as hard as you can because we are going to post your MPH to all the scouts."?

Exactly how was this done?
It is measured during the throwing drills so it is incorporated into the whole picture. They are probably aware of it being measured, but it's just one piece of the throwing assessment.

It's the difference between throwing a 25 yard throw in .8 seconds or 1.0 seconds. If 1.0 seconds is good enough, then no big deal. What it means is the 60 mph QB can slow down to 1.0 seconds if he has to, but the 50 mph QB cannot speed up to .8 seconds if he has to, which leads to an incompletion or interception.
Quote:Kizer wasn't a winner!

Not true.

Sure his team struggled last year and lost several games where the defense gave up a ton of points, but in 2015 his team went 10-2. It appears he took over as the starter week two and then started from week three on giving him an 8-2 record that year. So he certainly can win games.

Fixed.
The haters are out in full force. But lets make this clear. He took a team Clemson and Won the Ncaa championship.

Not just a bowl game. So had to win the playoffs. He also lately has been mocked at 6 to the Jets. And 10 to the Bills.

Velocity is over rated. Blaine threw lazors. Problem? No one could catch um.

SO yes. Would love Watson at 4. He is a clutch qb who wins.

And in the Nfl you either have a qb or you don't.

Ours is 12-34 and does not deserve another chance to be the starter.

We have not had a great qb since Brunell. And now is the time.

At 4 who else you draft? A DE though bust everytime? A safety when grabbed a leader? Have enough corners. A TE is laughable unless the next Gates. Oh the rb. To be carried by other rookies and journey men.

Watson would be a great pick and tell me Khan and Tom truly want to win and substain winning in the future.

Grabbing a natural leader fron the toughest conference in the NCAA.

Where no big game is guarenteed. And a NCAA champion.

It would show the rest of the NFL we are here to win. And our rivals be like? Those Jags are not playing around.

Fournette and cook could be huge difference makers. But at end of day. This isnt college and without a successful confident qb.

Wont win a superbowl.

Technically is not because was no playoff system at that time.

None of these QBs are the one we are looking for. Watson stares down every throw, he isn't even reading the defense because he has decided where he is going to force it even before the snap. This made him an Interception machine at the college level, at the pro level, he will be an interception factory.

As we have said before, strong arm doesn't guarantee success, but a squirt gun arm almost certainly guarantees failure.

You're right, we don't have a QB right now, but there isn't one in the draft that is ready to play right now. Watson might turn out okay if he changes some things, but at this point he is a developmental player. Next years QB crop looks better, we can get one then.
