Yes, Parnell has been decent and has worked out okay, but he was still another team's backup. House was certainly signed to be the starter - you don't give him that contract to be a backup. McCourty was a free safety. Sergio Brown was signed to be the starter the day after they missed on McCourty.
Quote:Lol@ the guy that said Safeties play until they are almost 40...

I think you misread what I wrote. I am laughing at the guy who says Reggie Nelson is too old at age 32 coming off his best season of his career and the best safety season in the NFL this year. He has 3-4 solid seasons left. Safeties, like QBs, are able to play at an elite level LONGER than other positions.
Quote:I want Ramsey to be our FS, not weddle.

Agreed, Jalen Ramsey is a bigger, faster, stronger version of The Honey Badger. The guy could dominate as a single high FS, slot CB, LB, etc..., he has the freakish athletic ability to force off the edge as a blitzer as well.
Just wait until the "Don't spend money in FA" thread starts.

Let me sum it up for you:

     It never works out

Good players don't get let go

     Over paid

     We got burnt before with.....

And the response/argument is....How has not spending work for us in the last 5 years?

Yeah.... I don't see anyone really arguing that when we've got this amount of cap-space and a few good FA players already under our belt with Caldwell.

I, personally,  think they'll sign two guys that require contract guarantees of 20 million or more and they'll be thrilled to do it.
As a Gator fan, Mackensie Alexander is the better CB to me. Vernon gets burnt a lot.

I'd much rather sign Nelson than Weddle.

If we could get Weddle and draft Ramsey that's my dream scenario. That way Weddle can start for two years and Ramsey can lock down the second CB spot. Then take over for Weddle later. By that time we should have drafted a few more corners.

Agreed

The Jags need more int's
We need 3-4 new pass rushers.
With a fully healthy roster I think playoffs are attainable with two good pass rushers, a new LB, and a passable FS.
We're going 10-6 next year.

We have a pretty good group of core players, but we are lacking in certain areas and I think they can all be filled this offseason.   Specifically, Center, Free Safety, Linebacker, and Defensive Line/Pass Rush.   I have confidence we will fill all those holes.  I would add, if you want more pass rush, it doesn't have to come from a Leo.   You can get increased pass rush from anywhere on the defensive line, or even linebacker.

On defense, spend the #5 pick on DE Joey Bosa or FS/CB Jalen Ramsey.  We need a linebacker who can substitute for Poz on obvious passing downs.   And we need a FS.   Eric Weddle would be a win-now type of signing, because as a proven veteran, he can get the guys in the defensive backfield lined up properly.   And he's a good tackler.

On offense, we can move Cann to Center and get a guard in free agency or the draft.  If we strengthen both C and LG, we will run the ball better and that will take a lot of pressure off Luke Joeckel by having fewer 3rd and longs.

If we do just those four things this offseason, we can have a great season next year.

Weddle gets you two important things: he can be a leader in the defensive backfield and get the guys lined up properly.   And he's a good tackler.

I don't know that much about Nelson since he left here.   When he was at UF, there was a lot of talk about is lack of brainpower.

If we get Weddle, I would hope that there would be a defensive lineman worth the #5 pick, because with (and maybe even without) Weddle, our biggest need would be defensive lineman.

I watched him in the title game, and he came in with a pulled right hamstring, played anyway, and then he pulled his left hamstring and went out.

I am sick of pulled hamstrings.

The pressure is on.   This is it.  Now or never.   Dave and Gus will be very aggressive in free agency.   Because it's win or else.

Our thoughts align pretty well.
Look I am not drinking the Gus koolaid.  However.   No coach does much better with a D that is always folding.

DE - Jaguars are losing both Clemons and Branch.  Fowler can be the starter, but the team will need a FA DE to replace the other.

FS - Weddle is an option, but I would prefer Ramsey in the first round or best available FS in round 2.

DT - To play the 3-tech on first and second downs with Marks covering 3rd down.

LG - Cann or Linder will move to C.  Draft a LG in the third round or play Shatley or Bowanko at LG.

MLB/RB - Draft depth in rounds 4-7.

I just felt a disturbance in the force.

Something big is going to go down this offseason.
