The line isn't ideal atm, our new Oline guy is meant to he very good at making and developing lines so perhaps that's part of the thinking.

We'll only go as far as that line takes us this year so I hope they are right.
Quote:Yeah, which makes the signing perplexing. His now the 28th highest paid guard out of 64 starting guards. Of course that will drop a few spots when Lang and others get signed, but it's still a very high salary for a backup.

I can't be thrilled if I'm Omameh and only signed for 700k just to have the Jags give a guy 3 mil AAV who played far worse than I did last year.

You cry too much

Oh yeah I forgot. The team going through quite possibly the biggest stretch of futility in NFL history should be above questioning.

They probably consider him a potential starter/solid fixture. Interesting #s.

I wonder if they talked to Campbell about him. I assume they faced each other a bunch in practice.

I thought KY was "retiring" from the Jags section of the forum?
Quote:It's a bit of a head scratcher considering we still have Omameh, Bowanko, Wells, and Shatley...3 of which just signed extensions.

Just in case anyone wants to read what PFF says about him (it's not pretty):

PFF is good for some things. Grading Offensive line play isn't one of them.
Depth signing. We will draft a guard or tackle with our 2nd round pick, book it.
Versatile depth.
Just because he signed for 2 years/$6 M doesn't mean the contract is guaranteed.  Good chance this guy gets cut if he doesn't win the starting job.

But - it adds competition to the mix for the G/C positions to see which 3 guys come out on top.  Linder is a lock, Cann not so much.  Could be either a draft pick or someone already on the roster.  With a weak draft class for O-line, Tom is just hedging his bets.

There is plenty to quibble with with PFF, but I highly doubt they are so wrong that a guy they have rated among the worst players at the position for 3 years is actually a starting level caliber player.
Quote:Agreed. This doesn't eliminate or lessen the need for OL in the draft.

No question. I'd still be surprised if two of the top three picks are not linemen.
Quote:Cann is straight cha-rash

Come on now.

So, unless they're Pro Bowl bound they suck?

It makes sense right now. The more lineman we have going into training camp and preseason the better. These extensions and the signing of him and trading for Albert just continue to echo that this isn't a very deep class for offensive lineman this year.

There's no lineman being pegged to be a top ten pick right now. Some places have maybe Ramcyzk or Bolles going to Denver at No. 20 at the earliest. I think we'll ultimately land someone like Dawkins or Feeney on day two. If they're that concerned with the right side of the line.

Fluker and Mangold are still out there too I believe. If they can bring in another guy like that on a one year deal to compete for a job or add quality depth I am all for it as well.

As you'll read when you keep going, that's hardly depth/competition money though. Omamah's 700k is depth/competition money, not Watford's top half of all starting guards salary.

Not like the money hurts us or anything, but it might hint that they have a bigger role for him than we would think.

If it's true that he's a better run blocker than pass blocker and that he can play RG and RT then it makes sense if they plan on running in heavy packages and formations this year.

This team is trying to get heavier and tougher up front. Especially when they're taking a look at Murray who stands at 6'3 - 230 at RB. They're trying to get away from relying on Bortles so much this year.

I see him battling Shatley for the possible last roster spot on the OL. ..nothing more.

No but he fell off hard.
Quote:No they aren't, but they have had two guys watch and independently grade every snap he had made in the last 3 season.

Probably means a bit more than our opinion, which was "Who?".
how do you know this? Are you there with them when they watch the tape on every player in the league? I don't believe they watch as much as you say they do. It shows in a lot of their grades. I think they to watch a good bit of film but not half as much as they claim to do. Its just a site to make money from all the clicks imo
