I know the board really wants Gipson or Berry very badly and rightfully so
A lot wants Ramsey in the draft
If none of these guys are available to us what do you guys think of Reggie Nelson? Not saying that he will be available but I haven't seen his name come up
Do you remember who drafted Reggie Nelson and traded him to Cincinnati? There was a reason we got rid of him: no production in Jacksonville. He is one of those guys who for whatever reason needed a change of scenery to succeed. So I don't think Dave Caldwell would be interested in bringing him back. What we need is the best free safety available and Nelson is not that guy. But don't get me wrong; Nelson is having a great season with the Bengals and I like him there.
So are you basically saying he has worn out his welcome in Jacksonville?
Sorry, I wasn't a fan when the Jags drafted him
If we cant get Berry I really want Weddle. Weddle is also a couple years younger and I think he will play with a chip on his shoulder and be an all pro again next year when he gets out of SD

Under a different coach, he would be a different player here. Reggie is an instinctual player, Del Rio tried to change the way he played and it didn't work out at all for him.
As desperate as the Jags are for a starting free safety I would at the very least consider Nelson

Would Gus Bradley try to change the way he plays? I don't know enough about Cincinnati's defensive scheme to make a comparison. However I know scheme fit or misfit is one reason some players have mixed success depending on what team they play for. Just ask DeMarco Murray.

I don't know if he would or not, but the way he's playing now, I'd have to think they'd just let him be him.

He is playing great now. I hope whoever we get at free safety can do what Reggie does - especially in the interception department.
He'd be my plan C or D, but I'd easily welcome Nelson back. He's been A LOT better in Cinci, but he's aging at a position that generally needs some speed to succeed. Nelson would be a solid short term option while we develop someone, perhaps Sample or another draft pick, for a couple seasons.

I don't think Caldwell worries too much about the age of veteran players because he signs them as "band-aids" - temporary fixes until the next draft. Of course he does not sign over-the-hill guys like the Colts did but it is important to bring in a few veterans at a variety of positions.
What I would like to know is why Reggie got so much better in Cincinnati. Is it coaches, teammates, scheme fit, or maybe just being a late bloomer? That must be determined if we want to give him a 2nd chance.
Nelson was average on his best days here, not sure there is much desire to see if he is any better the second time. Weddle would be a strong choice..proven talent who feels the Chargers sold him short. He would be a welcome addition to the mess we call a defensive backfield.
I thought Nelson was gong to be a star here in his rookie year. Then he got hurt against the Colts going for an interception and he never seemed to be the same player after that.
I'd consider him but only if we can't get Berry, Gipson, Weddle, or Ramsey.

I remember when Brian Williams and Nelson collided in that end zone interception and Nelson sustained a bone bruise and truly didn't look the same again - a bit timid and then the whole JDR "I only play safety" fiasco sent The Eraser packing.

Yup, that was the play.
Yeah, my lasting memory of Nelson was him complaining to the media that he didn't want to play cornerback, with Del Rio publicly responding that Nelson would kick if he were told to. I haven't heard anything about him being an attitude problem in Cincy, and frankly, Del Rio gave plenty of guys reasons to have an attitude problem that year.
I wouldn't be too excited about the idea of bringing Reggie back, nor am I even sure the Bengals would let him go given what they have behind him. It'd be hard to argue that Brown or Evans are any better, though, so if the plan was to bring Reggie in on a de facto one-year deal and draft a guy in the third or fourth round to become the center fielder, I think we could do worse.
Like, you know, going with some combination of Brown and Evans again.
There is no attitude problem in Cincinnati because the Bengals let him play at his natural position. I don't think Marvin Lewis ever suggested Reggie Nelson should be moved to cornerback.
When Nelson was here he was an immature hot shot with a big paycheck. He has grown up and matured. Good for him! He plays within the system and contributes.

I also thought he was a late bloomer. A lot of players are like that.
He had the hit of the season by a country mile on Daniels.
