What Every Man (and Woman) Should Know About Whiskey

Today, lots of men and women seem to be drinking whiskey, but not all of them seem to really know what whiskey truly is. While some know that Scotch is a whiskey, many don’t know that bourbon doesn’t have to be from Bourbon County, Kentucky to be called as such.

So, if you want to become a whiskey master, here are a few of the basics.

What Every Man (and Woman) Should Know About Whiskey:

Two more things everyone should know about whiskey:

1. In college, it's expected that you'll learn very quickly that the only thing whiskey from a plastic bottle is good for is starting a fire. If it's not at least 80 proof, it's not even any good for that and should be used to clean wounds or mix with a bit of the good stuff that you give to friends. That'll keep them from going after the bottle of Pappy when you're away.

2. No self-respecting man or woman should ever drink Famous Grouse. There are just so many better brands out there.

I'm not a whiskey connoisseur.. I like Jim Beam and Jack Daniels..

I also like Bells and Red Label..

In fact, just give me whiskey!!

Personally I'm a big fan of Knobb Creek or Basil Hayden. Straight and at room temp but I like to swish it in the glass and let it aerate for a minute to let some of that acetone flavor come out.

The best 2 ways to enjoy a whiskey:

1. With a steak. A good steak like a prime rib, filet mignon, etc.

2. With a cigar. I like either pairing it with a Java or Robusto type cigar.

And watching this while I do it. On the big screen.

Knob Creek is my favorite, so far. Buffalo Trace is really good, as well as Elijah Craig. I just finished off a bottle of Woodford Reserve, which also makes a good hot toddy and mixes well with egg nog (but don't they all). I'm thinking about signing up for ABC Liquor's Bourbon Lottery to get a chance at some rarer stuff.

Btw, Four Roses is awful IMO. It starts off okay but has a funky finish. It reminds me of the taste I get in my mouth after nibbling on cheese for a while. That bottle got utilized to be drank with mix. Can't waste it.
I got a bottle of Jameson Caskmates for Christmas. It was very good.

I had no idea that Scotch and Bourbon were Whiskeys. What it it's made somewhere outside of the U.S., Canada, Ireland or Scotland? Is then not a Whiskey even if it's made the same way?

Anything distilled and 80 proof or above (40% ABV) is considered a Whiskey / Whisky

All bourbons are whiskey, but whiskey is not bourbon. Unlike whiskey, bourbon is distilled with 51% corn and to a different proof. There's other small differences, but those are the big ones.
Aw hell, just look it up.

Among my Christmas presents:

I'm not sure what to drink to ring in the new year. It's a nice problem to have.

I might opt for a dirty vodka martini. I'd heard good things about the Costco brand (Kirkland) vodka, and am not disappointed.

Here's a tip I've received a few times; unless you've had a few lessons on how to taste whisky and distinguish between flavors, don't bother spending more than $50-$60 a bottle because you're not going to taste a difference anyway.

You can't mix them either. Well, you can, but the next day will be hell.

Go with the tequila. Its festive character is a good match for New Years. Save the bourbon for a nice mellow glow.

This doesn't surprise me. Google the MSNBC story about Costco's wine enterprise.

My brother made some fresh moonshine and I'm just sipping on that. 100 proof, STRAIGHT OUT THE MASON JAR SON!

I've never spent more then $40-$45 A bottle on Scotch (Johnnie Walker Red and Black) But I've have had the Blue Label and I can tell the difference between the three. I can also tell the difference between most bourbons and whiskeys just by the aroma. (A Wild Turkey 101 is a lot stronger than say a Jack Daniels) And don't get me started on Ouzo.........
I'm not a big whisky drinker either, but recently came across Makers Mark and loved it. Managed to find somewhere selling it locally

I rode over a hundred miles yesterday to buy a bottle of MM. Not because that was the closest place, but because I wanted to ride. MM is just good basic bourbon to have around. Not pretentious and not bottom shelf.

Most of the Kirkland label is pretty good and usually about 70% of the Costco price for regular brands. Big drop from the cost at the liquor store. The tequila is stout and the big bottles of pre mixed margaritas sell for 10 bucks. Good deal.
