Why would they not want to sign him to another contract? Poz should be long gone next year, it's not like impact defenders in their prime grow on trees. If they all have great years then the front office will need to cut some older guys they've signed to big money in years past, but keeping quality Young talent is important.

This. The 5th year option was installed to assist the club, not the player. It allows the club to prevent the player from benefiting from free agency.

 

As stated above, it's only a guarantee against injury. Other than for an injury that prevents Bortles from being able to pass a physical, the club can cut him prior to the beginning of the new league year in 2018 and not owe him anything. If Bortles has a great year the club pays a "reasonable" salary in 2018 while trying to work out a long term deal - or franchising him in 2019.

 

I'm pretty sure they'll do the option - unless they shock everyone and draft a QB at #4.

Got to really wonder about that Bortles option. If it isn't picked up and he actually does play well this season, puts a lot of pressure on the FO to keep Bortles, Arob, Linder, Telvin, Lee and even possibly AC next offseason.

That would be a good problem to have. Can't re-sign everyone. The Steelers, Packers, Patriots regularly let good players leave after their rookie deals. Of that list, Colvin would be the odd man out for me, but a regression/injury issues from Lee could make him a goner. Lots can change in a year though

Kinder IMO is the one lock

Hurns can be cut for free too so it might be a case of Lee and Hurns battling next year to see who gets to stay around long term.

Lee and AC are totally expendable. Linder and Telvin are the top priorities by far, Arob needs to put together another solid season but I have a good bit of faith as long as Bortles doesnt totally sabotage him, and obviously blake remains to be seen.

Shazier is one of the smallest Ilb in the league an yet one of the beSt constantly making plays for the steelers I don't see telvin being any different
