Shad will buy ski cola and sell it exclusively at the stadium
Quote:1. Telvin Smith is the odd man out on the re-signing of the big five.

2. After years of speculating a trade down, the Jags finally do.

I hope not. If the decision had to be made today, I'd rather lose Bortles. Telvin is a beast.

It's going to be tough, Telvins going to want around 10 million+ a year.
Quote:From a purely performance standpoint, there's no reason to pick up the 5th year option on Blake. You could just tag him if he bounces back this year or even just ascends to mediocrity. If he's terrible, either walk away or offer him a market value contract to be a placeholder QB.

The only issue is that Linder, Lee, Telvin and ARob are all due to hit free agency in 2018. If they can't sign them all to long term contracts this year then there might be more than one player hitting free agency in 2018 that you might consider tagging. I don't think it's much of a risk that we wouldn't be able to extend Linder, Telvin and at least one of Lee or Robinson if not both. I feel like picking up Blake's 5th year $18 million+ guaranteed salary is too big a risk considering what we've seen from him so far. I think they'll pass and make him play for the contract this year and tag him if need be. Hopefully it won't cost us Lee or Robinson.

We have 5 key players playing for contracts this year though. Hopefully that will lead to some over achieving this year. It's all on Blake though. Make him earn it this year.
At the price of young bad QB's now a days 18 mil is probably the best decision. You can always cut him before it becomes gaurenteed. But if he has even a half way decent year, we will end up paying more.

too bold too bold.

You might as well say that Shad gets fed up after we go 0-2 fires everyone and brings back bradley and we go to the playoffs if we are going to imaginationland.

Actually I like your idea better.

Linder, A-Rob, Smith, Lee....Bortles in that order.

Linder, Arob, Smith =s around 34 million a year gone off the cap

Actually, after looking into the numbers further regarding the 5th year option, it looks like it would be significantly higher than $18 million.  The 5th year option averages the top 10 salaries at the position to come up with the 5th year option salary for the QB it's being exercised on.  Not sure if it's based on the top 10 salaries at the time the option is exercised, which must be done prior to the start of the 4th year, or the top 10 salaries in the actual 5th year (which would be higher by virtue of being a year later).

The top 10 QB salaries from 2016 would average out to a little over $22 million.  Blake's 5th year would then either be that number or potentially based on whatever the 2017 top 10 QB salaries would be.  A player's salary can stay the same from one year to the next while they are under contract, but I don't think it can't decrease year to year per league rules (however, his cap number can decrease based on how the contract is structured and what the signing bonus was).  So you'd have to assume that the 2017 number would be greater than the 2016 number.  At $22 mil or more for the 5th year, the number isn't far off from the franchise tag number.

I think you guys that are sure we're picking up the 5th year option are glossing over the potential for injury.  If they do pick it up, I'm guessing Blake has 6 games (and probably less) to show improvement before they get him out of there and move on even if it means Henne, Allen or an unnamed draftee start the rest of the year.

Myles Jack will lead team in tackles, force fumbles and interceptions.

Neal Sterling has an 8 touchdown year.

I just don't see them extending an undersized WLB at the tune of 10mil plus versus keeping the young offense intact.

Also, one must consider that LB is easily the most expendable position other than FB.

What if the 'young offense' is trash.

What if ARob never bounces back.

What if Lee gets injured again?

What if Bortles is BBINT forever?
