Quote:No doubt the defense and interior line should be the primary focus, but if the interest in Jacksonville is lukewarm for our top targets, why not at least lob an offer?

Under that scenario,  it would make sense.   But the likelihood of this happening when the dust settles seems to be remote unless something dramatically changes.

Realistically, the odds of us getting any specific singular free agent are very low, but these are message boards.

That's true being that there are 32 teams.  But it's much less likely that the Jags will get a WR who much more likely than not won't hit the open market than a player at one of the positions you mentioned in your previous post that will likely hit the open market.
In OC Olson & Ast HC OLine Marrone's first year the teams offense is now ranked 16th overall (12th in Passing) and Blake Bortles is about to pass 4,000 passing yards with 31 TDs (3rd in the NFL), and the team is about to have two WRs with over 1,000 yards receiving (Hurns only needs 93 yards)!
Quote:Just because it's a more pressing need doesn't mean that we should pass on a LT if he's the BAP in that spot. We need to supplement the secondary and the pass rush through free agency because realistically, we aren't likely to dramatically improve the defense by playing a bunch of rookies. That's just a historical fact.
I'm not advocating passing on a stud LT for a clearly inferior player because of a need and I agree with what you've said above. I think the team has to draft blue chip defensive players while supplementing with FA's as this helps next season and beyond. I was just reacting to some who feel like LT is what the team absolutely has to draft because Joeckel hasn't lived up to his second overall draft position. Like I've implied, Joeckel has played well enough for the team to not reach for a LT unnecessarily.

Quote:For my money I'd rank our needs as follows.

1. FS

2. LEO

3. Center

4. SS

5. OTTO

6. CB

7. LT

8. K

Anything outside of that is just gravy, but I think we could stand to seriously upgrade at the top 4 spots.
This is pretty accurate. It would be nice to have a good C to go along with Linder (already a stud) and Cann (I think will be very good). Zane Beadles is awful and I can't wait for him to be gone or on the bench. While Joeckel may be average or below average, Beadles is flat out awful.
Don't we always say "next year is going to be our year"?

We just haven't been able to say "Nice season" in front of it, for a very long time.

How much extra cap space can be had with Beadles off the books? I agree, he's bad. That whiff on that last 3rd down sealed his fate.
We may need another disruptive pass rusher to go along with the FS.

This teams arrow should be pointing up for the foreseeable future.
Why can't we wait and see what Fowler has before we go burning up draft picks first?

I realize we need a LEO. But we just drafted him.

Wouldn't you rather have a shut down corner to go with our LEO that we already have?

I realize he tore his acl, but once he is cleared, then it'll be like we drafted him all over again.
Quote:Give me a new LT, a pass rush, and help in the secondary, and I can see a playoff shot next season.
Give me an effective left tackle and left guard and an effective pass rush (better d-linemen) and a better defensive scheme, and I can see us breaking .500 next season... maybe.
