Lets put it this way.  I believe the team should be in the hunt for 2 different starting safety's.  Cyprien has not proven to be reliable.   Also in this scheme Cypriens job is to go man to man with the tight ends.  He hasn't shown to be reliable in coverage either. Old Man Gates made him look really silly.

To be fair, that is one of the few weaknesses of Seattle's defense.
Quote:cyp never had the play making ability that Nelson had. Bad point.

I never said that he did. They play two different positions. Maybe you missed the point?
Quote:I'll say it a million times. He still takes the occasional bad angle like a lot of safeties but the man has no consistent force next to him at FS. The FS and SS need to have constant communication but for some reason Gus keeps rotating Sergio and Evans in and out of the game. Whether you want to believe it or not it, that does affect his play in coverage being on the same page with the other safety.

He's gotten a lot better recently.  He is talented and works hard.  He'll never be an elite player but he'll make a pro-bowl appearance or two around his 5th or 6th year.  Some people will still insist he's a bust but that's only because they are dweebs who can't admit when they're wrong.

Good FS play will improve him next year, and of course a pass rush.

Quote:Too bad we gave up on Reggie Nelson. He has 18 pass deflections and leads the NFL with 8 interceptions.

I'd take him over Josh Evans anyday. Great job Gene!

HIs success does give me some hope for Cyp. Nelson was even worse at taking bad angles.

That said, I miss Double D. He always took the best angles, and it never mattered who the FS was.

Quote:Me thinks some people don't watch other teams play if they think Cyp is so bad. And those SS have good FS play next to them. I dare you to find a play from a young SS who hasn't taken a few bad angles and missed a key tackle or two out there a game. Hell, Kam still does it. It happens all the time but only Cyp gets ripped here for it.

Cyp was basically a first round pick...expectations should be higher than average.

Reggie Nelson was too.

In an exceptionally weak draft class. I think that point should be noted.

I'm basically a millionaire...
Cyp might actually be decent these days but we know he isn't a player that can make up for some slack in other areas of the secondary. We've needed a Free Safety for a while.  I would say he is average; not in a bad way.

Didn't read the whole thread..   but Cyp doesn't hit hard enough for my taste.  No one is afraid of him..  AND he takes bad angles..  he'll do for now, since we have bigger needs, but he needs to get a LOT better..

Tell that to Shady McCoy.
I seem to notice Evans almost as much as Cyp.  Evans has provided some quality minutes this year.

Evans has improved a lot. I remember him as a rookie trying to make tackles with his arms or just push people down. He actually uses his body and takes some punishment now. He's bulked up a lot since Gus wanted him to play SS too. Could probably start as a SS on some teams out there.
Cyprien has played bad most of the year.  He has had a couple of decent games but still unreliable. He does not put fear in receivers coming across the middle.

A couple hard hits do not overcome the 50 missed tackles and bad angles he has taken in his short career.

Actually, it's pretty easy to overcome the mistakes a player makes early in their career. Players do that all the time.

This isn't college. Barring injury, he still has close to a decade of pro football ahead of him.
