Things that make you go hmmm...

You really think the Big10 could go toe to toe with the SEC? Even in a down year like this in the SEC, they would still walk over the Big 10

Arkansas would be able to beat any team I the Big 10
I do think the league has come back to the pack a little bit. Why is Florida not on the list? Preseason unranked, around 40 I believe and ranked now.

The Arkansas team that lost to Toledo?

Things do evolve throughout the year.  What was thought to be the top team in the Big 10 hasn't been a top 25 team all year.  Arkansas has been playing pretty darn good as of late.

With that said, the SEC East is a joke and to act like any of the top 4 teams from the Big 10 wouldn't have a shot at winning that division is showing your true colors.  UF is only 10-1 because of how horrible the league is, not how good they are.  While Mcelwain has done a good job coaching that team, that offense is more of a 6-6 team than 10-1.
It makes one wonder when the preseason rankings will stop giving these biased rankings to SEC teams.

You mean like Auburn being ranked #6 after going 8-5 last year?

In all honesty, if you look at the preseason poll its not that bad.  They have to make educated guesses somewhere.  Auburn was the pick by many to win the west so putting them at 6 only made sense.  The teams mostly sort themselves out by the end of the year anyway.

What's your suggestion for a better way?

Nope

I think all of this can be solved by not having preseason polls. Let the season play out for 5-6 weeks. The folks in the media simply don't know enough/can't keep up/really are clueless to do a preseason polls.

Look at Iowa. No one on this board, let alone the media would have had Iowa in the top 15, let alone #3 and on the verge of a playoff spot. Who'd a thunk Georgia Tech would have been as bad as they are after a phenomenal season?

The coaches poll preseason wise, was not much different. Fact of the matter of it is, preseason polls are probably a bit to difficult to do. Even at that though the cream always rises.

The AP creates the polls purely to have something to talk about.  They could care less if SEC fans toot their own horn for having the best conference or if ACC fans get mad that the SEC has 10 teams in the top 25 to start out the year.  That's the point, to get people to talk.

Besides that, it's all a pure guess at that point.  It's the main reason the playoff committee waits so long for their first poll to come out.  The AP has all the right in the world to put the poll out, it's the fans that need to relax and not give it so much importance.
The problem is that it influences rankings later in the year, it doesn't just create discussion.  Auburn being ranked or talked about as a SEC West favorite had me scratching my head all pre-season.  They were not good last year and lost a ton of key players, it didn't add up.

I'd love to see a similar chart for each P5 conference.

It's just a meaningless preseason poll, like said, it has no effect on the end of the season.

It's basically just for poops and giggles.

By the time the playoff committee puts out their first poll, the AP/Coaches, etc., etc., are already caught up to where they are truly supposed to be ranked, so the amount to which the committee may be influenced by those polls is extremely minimal.

Here's an idea...don't have a preseason poll. Wait until the teams start playing before crowning someone the next big thing.

Remember when Jeremy Johnson was a dark horse Heisman candidate?

That was a good one.

The Auburn thing really made no sense. They were a mediocre team last season. Same with Tennessee. They're a .500 team in 2014 with zero wins over ranked teams. And yet were ranked in the top 25.

Haha, the Tennessee hype every year always makes me laugh.  Every year they are going to be new and improved and every year they are the same old crappy team.  The thing is, you have an outlier occasionally, but for the most part the rest of the teams stay about in the same place year after year....its why the polls stay the same way at the start of every year.
