I believe Bobby Bowden was asked about how a team should progress when rebuilding.  His response was to lose big, lose small, win small, win big.  We're in between the lose small / win small window.  The arrow is pointed in the right direction.  People are justifiably disappointed that the wins aren't there, but I don't think we're that far from seeing them start to pile up.

I love that Bowden quote and it's exactly what's happening this year. We're losing small, not by a large margin and almost beating them.

They are definitely not the only reason, just a big one.  Against TB, HOU, and NEP they were awful.  Even against BUF they capitalized on some plays early then sucked at the end.

This team has big reasons they struggle in all 3 phases (4 if you count coaching) of the team.


-The defense has been awful while the offense looked good.

-vice-versa:: The defense has looked good at times while the offense looked awful.

-special teams fumbles punts and misses FGs

-Bortles throws costly INTs at critical times

-WRs drop passes

-O-line looks dreadful alot.

- Coaching situations (challenges, bad timeout management)


This team has alot of big reason they're still struggling. Even still,, they are improving. They're actually more competitive and have a chance to win about any game. That's a big step forward already.

The team is getting better. They have the main pieces in place on offense. They are young and will grow together.

I have no problem citing a team as weak because of injuries, but you also have to account for the jags' injuries.

Aside from Fowler, we've been pretty fortunate injury wise this season. We havent lost key players aside from Poz for one game.

We were without Marks and Thomas for a month. We were without Yeldon for a game. Linder, Joekel and Colvin have missed games.



Edit: Colvin didn't miss a game. He had a shoulder injury in the Dolphin game that caused him to miss time in the Dolphins, Patriots and clots games.

I'd say Linder is a key player.  What about Yeldon and Robinson both being injured at different points?  We've also seen our receiving corps get dinged up. Hurns missed a game earlier this year with a foot injury. 

 

The Jags have dealt with their fair share of injuries starting with the guy that they were putting a lot of expectations into with Fowler.  We've seen our DB crew getting banged up during games to the point where we're trotting Nick Marshall out there. 

 

Every team deals with injuries.  The Jags are no exception.  The injuries have hit them at key positions

The people who were saying "as long as we're competitive" are notorious for moving the goal line in order to perpetuate their shtick.

Theyr'e not elite. They're not even a powerhouse. But, they are a decent football team that is a good measuring stick for where this team is currently. The Jags were in that game all the way to the end. It sucks to lose, but if we get a couple of calls to go our way, or if Joeckel or Poz fall on fumbles, the outcome could have been completely different.


The Jags have the misfortune of not only having to battle their opponent, but also having to overcome the lousy officiating in order to win games. Losing sucks, but as you look at the progression this team is making currently, the improvement is there. Things need to start falling their way. It may require them to step up and make a little of their own luck. They certainly won't be getting any help in the process.

Agreed. Poz had the ball in his hands, dont know how he lost it. He recovers that, we get the ball midfield and get 40 extra seconds. Could of been a totally different game.

Tired of people saying this team has improved when they haven't, they are just putting up better stats. You improve when your win/loss record looks better than previous years. People wanna put this regime on a pedestal so bad with the improvement shtick in a new offensive league where big numbers is being put up by scrub back ups these days. The McCown in Cleveland was dropping decent games one with 457 yards. Mariotta has two 4 td games. Hoyer has shined in games. So now all of sudden the Jaguars has finally walked thru the new NFL door and put up numbers on offense they're improved? Yeah right. The defense still sucks and the only improvement that matters is the wins and they still are the worst team in the worst division in the league. What improvement?

Your point is clear, but just to clarify further... the defense isn't responsible for some of those points allowed.  I'm not going to dig through each game to find how many pick 6's, fumbles deep in our own territory or special teams blunders we've had versus the competition but a portion of those points allowed is on the offense and/or special teams.  It feels like we have more of those types of mistakes than other teams but since I don't watch every game of every other team I don't know that to be true.

Actually it wasn't difficult using Pro-football-reference.com to pick out defensive TD plays for the entire league this year and further scrutinize them by whether the affected team won or lost.  Here's the link for anyone interested in looking at the specific plays.  Just scroll to the bottom to the "Individual Plays" tab and click on the second column "Tm" to sort by affected team.  

 

In short, only 1 team so far this year leads the league with three of their losses including a TD by the other team's defense and that team is the Jaguars.  The three games in question were against the Panthers, Texans and Bucs.  All three could have gone the other way without the other team's defense getting a TD.  This isn't earth shattering stuff as we've likely all watched all of our games and remember the plays in question, but holding it up to the rest of the league it's apparent we shoot ourselves in the foot more than anyone else.  It needs to stop and I expect it will or those calling for Bradley's head will likely get their wish perhaps by season's end.

At this time, there is a distinct possibility that we might do no better this season than we did last year; a 4-12 record is a distinct possibility! Personal stats mean nothing if they aren't backed up with wins. It doesn't matter if we might have the greatest receiving duo since 'thunder and lightning' if it doesn't translate into wins. It doesn't matter how many 'circus act' receptions those two make if BB (as in Bumbling Bortles) keeps turning the ball over.

 

I think 'BB' was right to refer to complaining fans as 'kindergartners'. The proof is in how we all like to watch 'BB the clown' and the 'Bumbling Bortles circus'. Even though we are treated to the same 'show' every Sunday... with the 'clown' looking like a buffoon, we always watch.

It's part of the problem, not 100%.  Surprisingly, the Jags team rushing defense is ranked 6th at the moment.  I'm sure that was helped by a strong performance against the Jets on Sunday.  Total yards given up they are ranked 17th currently.  Total TDs given up specifically by our D this year is 22.  The average for the entire league is 19.9.  I don't think the D is as bad statistically as you are making it out to be.  There is clearly room for improvement, like creating more pressure and turnovers, but several of our losses could be wins if the offense doesn't have mental break downs at key points in the game.

The defense is pathetic. The 22 touchdowns is 24th best in NFL. It's WORST in Jags history. We are #31 in interceptions and #30 in points allowed. They simply can't STOP anybody, ever. Losing back to back to back games vs. Hasselbeck, Hoyer, and Jameis Winston would be enough to get Gus fired if we had a real owner. Gus is a terrible defensive coach. 

 

I love how you sugar coat it but:

 

1) Bortles is going to be the best jags QB in their history 

 

and

 

2) This defense is the worst in Jags history in ppg
