You stop it at 2:09 and save 9 seconds. You don't know if there will be a 3rd down.

At the end of the day save 9 seconds or save 30

But they can burn 30+ seconds before they snap the ball to the punter.  You wanted them to save 9 seconds before the 2-minute warning.  Just drop it.  It had nothing to do with the outcome and the math doesn't work in your favor.

Marshall had been giving us huge returns all game. There was every reason to have him out there. He should have kept his eyes on the ball.


 

As for penalties, there really wasn't that much. And this time Gus' replay challenge was a good one. The ref was just being an idiot.

But that's the point, in my mind.  The coaching is lazy.  The coaching is lacksidasical.  If the coaching was on point, if the coaching was intense and demanded perfection, we would not have errors at the critical moments of a game.

 

That's what I'm really talking about.

 

Yes, this team is not quiting.  This team has heart.  The coaches just do not have the desire to truelly prepare this team.  The mistakes this team makes are just unacceptable.  Teams that win don't make the type of mistakes we make.  They don't make those types of mistakes because the coaches force them to be perfect.  I think our coaches don't have that type of mentality.  Perfection is not a priority for the coaches.

 

Thus when they practice, "good enough" is just fine.  And when you practice "good enough", when you get into the critical moments of a tight game you fail.  You are not perfect.  You do not execute,  You run a play.  

 

You don't execute a play.  

 

We see failure on sunday because the coaches failed the players Monday through Saturday.  Gus needs to be fired.  We need a perfectionist to get us to wins.  Not a cheerleader.

 

 

I don't intend to exonerate the coaching, but I think you're overstating it a bit. The team is still really young. Roy Miller said it best that they're still learning as a team. It's crazy how you see them emphasize certain areas like stopping the run and containing Marshall, and the team will go out and do that only to have some boneheaded error show up where you never would have expected it. As O-Man keeps reminding us, they're still in that race to maturity. You look at teams that don't do this kind of stuff, and it's typically a team chalked full of veteran leaders that simply know better. This team is so very close to turning the corner and getting W's. Heck, they're actually playing better than at least half the league especially offensively, and it's been a long time since we've been able to say that much. Now they just need to focus on eliminating mistakes especially when looking to finish the game.

Sure he was pushing that last INT. It wasn't even a good throw, and he sort of panicked. That said, one thing I've been loving about Bortles is that you see he's continually learning from mistakes and getting better. Not that this hasn't happened before, but it's all part of his learning experience. This is only year two for him. Brady has had a long time in this league to perfect his game.

I'm struggling to understand your reasoning. As I see it, Gus lost 5 seconds by waiting, and really that's not too big of a deal. The decision to wait a down is more about knowing they don't do much on 2nd down. If you call it early and the Jets turn around and get close to a first a first down, or get a first down, you just wasted the time-out altogether. But after knowing you held them to a 3rd and 4, the chances are greater the time-out will be worth it. There's some logic to that thinking even though you lose five second. I don't see how you think the difference is like 30 seconds.


 

I'll clarify...


 

After the first down play Gus could have called their final time-out with 2:09 on the clock. It then would have been 2nd and 6 with 2:09 on the clock. They run the 2nd down, and you end up with it being 3rd and 4 at the two-minute warning. Then they run the 3rd down play and the Jets would have waited until about 1:12 and called their time-out.


 

As it happened, Gus waited one down to be sure it's worth it and let the clock run to the 2-minute warning on second down. The ran the 2nd and 6 play with 2:00 on the clock, and then after stopping them, he immediately called the time-out with 1:55 on the clock. Then they ran the 3rd down play and the Jets waited until 1:07 to call the time-out.


 

Again, we're only talking about five second here that was lost by waiting. You seem to somehow think the waiting saved them 30 seconds, and I'm not buying that.

Gabbert might actually throw a better pass, but the 49ers are bound to learn the hard way by starting him. Fortunately they were able to keep Gabbert in situations where he was able to turn and throw immediately when he had to throw while running the ball for the most part. Gabbert's struggles begin when he has to tuck the ball and try to make something happen, but he was never in that situation against the Falcons.
