Quote:Thankfully, we draft every year and not just this year.  There's no one player to draft at 4, especially not a S, that will take us to the penthouse.

I don't see how we can't come away with a RB in rounds 1-4,  but then Dave has surprised me before in not addressing needs.

Why "especially not a S"? If we can plug an elite SS into our secondary... along with securing Prince or another capable #2 CB.... the Jaguars just might have an elite secondary on their hands capable of shutting down offenses on the back end. I can see such a player putting the defense over the top provided the front seven gets their act together.

I'm thinking rounds 3 to 5 for a TE. ... the RB I'm thinking rounds 3 or 4.

In round 2 I'm still thinking qb if one of the top four falls that far... otherwise I'd kind of like to go OL or DL ... or maybe CB just because some really good ones might drop to the spot.

So, with the idea of a RB in rounds 3 or 4, who should they target? The rankings of course are all over the place, so first we should try and figure out what we need. Do we really need a starter, for instance, when we do have Ivory? Yeldon is not as bad as some here think and can come in of fthe bench to give Ivory a breather. Corey Grant can provide some speed in a scat back role. So what do we really want out a 4th RB on the roster assuming we kick DRob to the curb?

Maybe if we can pinpoint what we want out of a RB, we can better target one in the draft.

So I haven't read up much on the RBs as of yet, but I'm just watching film of guys listed after the top three. After a couple that I thought were just so-so, I ran across this one and WOW.

I'm looking a hard-nosed RB with speed reminding me of Charles Johnson...

What's not to like about D'Onta Foreman...

He fumbles a ton, isn't very agile and played some of the worst run defenses in college all year. He's a big guy who can run fast and block well.

D'Onta's game is more speed and power than it is agility so no big deal there... Coughlin knows how to fix fumbling issues... and he played for Texas which is a top school so the run defenses he faced couldn't have been all that bad.

This next guy I'm looking at is intriguing. That is, I don't know that I'm sold yet, but I'm wondering if I might be onto something with him. His name is Jeremy McNichols. Now remember I haven't even read a peep about these RBs so I'm interested in hearing what you have to say. I'm just getting to know these guys for the first time by watching tape and making up my own impression. So here goes...

At first I wasn't overly impressed but it just seemed like he racks up a lot of yardage. In another clip you couldn't even get much of a grasp for his running style because they were all close up shots of his legs moving. In this clip you can get a much better feel for him as a runner. What impressed me was the realization of who this guy is. Dude is MJD2.0. Watch him run and pretend he's MJD... He's totally another energizer bunny who can keep going and going... I don't see the Superman power and digging under piles that MJD had... but I see the incredible balance and the same style of running... more vertical, but natural and consistent. with no dancing .... just sheer production.,, he's got to have great vision to keep getting yards so naturally without being much of a cut-back or flashy back. ...

Texas tech-116th best rushing defense out of 128.

California- 127th

Kansas- 114th

Baylor- 87th

Oklahoma state - 82nd

TCU- 73rd

Notre Dame- 72nd

West Virginia - 60th

Oklahoma- 55th

Iowa state- 103rd

Kansas state- 14th

Not sure any other running back had a schedule as easy as that this year. Just something to note when watching him play. Always had a huge holes to run through.
Brian Hill out of Wyoming is impressive as well...

Now he's a RB you're going to want to watch closely, even in slo-mo, as he avoids defenders. He strikes me as being a taller RB with long legs, but fast for his size with cut-back ability. ... think more towards Fred Taylor as a runner... but just not quite THAT fast or cut-back. ...just toward that direction. He's even got that FT power where he'll blow a defender off him, run over a DB or power in for TD. At one point he was carrying several guys downfield.

As for his speed what I'm noticing is a 2nd gear he likes to use where you think you have him then he turns it on and is gone. His long stride results in him being deceptively fast often resulting in defenders taking bad angles. His cuts are smaller, quick jukes that make him slippery. The announcers called them "decisive," although they're not leave-a-LB-eating-dirt decisive. He doesn't dance like FT nor does he spend too much time running laterally.

Ok, but the thing is, I'm not looking at yardage totals. If you were arguing that his yards should be a lot less because of these schools than fine. But I'm just looking at his running style, and he's still just as impressive. Maybe against better schools he wouldn't have had so many players just slide off him, but his game wouldn't change all that much.

No just noting he had huge holes to run through against awful defenses. Makes him look better than he is.
The first thing I notice with Samaje Perine is how long all his highlight reels are. He has a LOT of highlight worthy footage...

Oh my... Just watching the first play of this highlight I know I'll be posting this one.

Why is Perine ranked so low? This is some awesome stuff.

He's a total rock. ...I'm reminded of Greg Jones college highlights. Heck, get him in here and let play both RB and FB. He's got both the acrobat-like athleticism and the sheer power and braun to blow up defenders. He's a literal ball of fire with incredible balance and vision. I'm struggling to understand why he's not at least a 2nd round RB?

At this point my top guys are Perine and Foreman after the top 3. Anyone else I should watch?

There are pushing 20 RBs worth drafting in this class...

I like Elijah McGuire as a fifth/sixth round steal.  He'll be a project in year one though.

Wow... I like him too...

It starts out with him finding a hole and then breaking out for the huge score. You figure, that must be a fluke as it's the first play they show, but then he keeps doing it highlight after highlight.

What stands out to me is his vision. He just finds his seems.

My slight concern is that often he's just a hair faster than the defense where he's able to go the distance, but in the NFL he's being caught on those plays.

Yeah he's kind of like Frank Gore. Only fumbled the ball once in 750+ snaps. Very good receiver too

Not if you want a RB who isn't one-dimensional. I want a guy with power and speed. That drastically narrows down the field.

True.

20 running backs worth drafting but there is a reason someone gets drafted 4th overall vs in the 5th round....

I think that's a terrible argument for not taking a back at #4.
I think a quick look around the league tells you everything about why not to take a running back at #4

Maybe but that's not what I'm talking about.

It's the same thing as saying there are 30 defensive linemen worth drafting this year.

OK? Great. But if it's as simple as that, no one would be concerned about who is ranked the highest, etc. Just saying that is a very short sighted, ignorant, argument.

I think its more so talking about the value of running backs as a whole.
