Quote:Yeah. Good call. Let's totally draft a SS 4th overall. Great value imo.
would you draft eric berry 4th overall if he was the bpa?

You know I used to agree with positional "value". But now I'm starting to be an advocate for just drafting the most amazing/Impact player available in the 1st round. This, of course excludes Kickers and Punters, but if there is a player that is believed to have an impact on a franchise like an Ed Reed or a Patrick Willis or an Antonio Gates or a Jonathan Ogden then you take them even if that's a position not likely for a top 4 pick.

But this is Not neccesarily an endorsement for Jamal Adams. Just that if we believe he's the next Troy Polamalu

Then we need to take him.

I dont think theres any defensive position that is straight up devalued besides 4-3 olb. But if youre even being considered that high youre probably good enough to play inside. Defense is just generally always valuable.
Top 10 safeties have the best hit rate too. If you are good enough they project you to buck the position value stigma you're pretty much a lock to be good.

Top 10 safety hits are all timers like Berry and Taylor. Average ones are multiple pro bowlers like Landry and Roy Williams. The worst ones are still solid long term starters like Huff and Barron. There are virtually no busts.

Sample's a lock to get looks at the SS position in camp, but whether or not he stays healthy is anyone's guess.  Would love to see him flourish. It's now (July)  or never.

What's a James Sample?

his position is as value as a LT, QB, or DE but I think he's the best player in the draft and the only player I feel might be the best player at his position in a few years. I think he is that good

Read what you wrote there. Unless he is a QB, his position is not as valuable as a QB.

It's like a Jim Sample, only bigger.

Ah, that's cleared that up then! :whistling:
I have a strong feeling we're going to make a serious run at Tony Jefferson in free agency. If we do, that would take any Safety off the table at #4.

What if it's Troy Polomalu?
I'll be honest. I forgot about him. He's never on the field; so we can't really count on him. I was really on the Adams train and still love the kid; but I'm really leaning towards Fournette now; even Cook too. Although, if we went Adams, I wouldn't be mad. Everybody saying that the Adams pick has no value; but I think it puts our Defense on the next level (if we get more pash rush). So I see the value there. But I understand our offense needs some serious help with the run game. Even Coughlin has said this recently. So I think that RB is going to be our pick at 4.

In the "Adams or Hooker?" thread, most people want Adams at #4 between those two. The only problem with Hooker is he can't work out at the combine or OSU's pro day, so all teams have to look at is 13 games.
Sample is like that defensive tackle we had a few years back who was always hurt, and whenever his name was brought up, people were like "Who????"

D'Anthony Smith. Gene gem

With all this Jamal Adams talk in the draft did we forget about Sample? He did show some flashes and his only knock so far has been health but he's been on the bad end of some pretty fluky injuries.

I honestly don't remember him flashing anything in a Jaguars uniform.  All he has shown is that he is unable to stay healthy.

He will be a bubble player IMO.

My take on him was always "slightly less aggressive against the run than Cyprien, but slightly better in coverage."  Of course this is based on his college work more than the few glimpses we've seen from him in the NFL.  He didn't look mentally up to speed in the NFL stuff I've seen, but that's had time to change by now.

Health is his biggest hurdle.

Haha! Yep, that's him. Thanks for reminding me.

No, and no.

A "Pro Bowl" safety would have zero impact on wins for the Jaguars.

Only a playoff team would be wise to draft a SS that high.  For everyone else, it's like putting the best mahogany money could buy on the deck of the Titanic.  Simply wouldn't matter until you have the core problems fixed.

A safety in another round would suffice for the Jaguars.  Otherwise, you're not being wise with value.
