What were your impressions about Week 1 games throughout the NFL? Not just who won and how, but also what happened on the field? I am talking about all 32 teams here.
1. Reggie Bush injury: Obviously it is never good to see a player hopping to the sideline like Bush did, you have to love how well Carlos Hyde played as his replacement. At one point ESPN said he ran 24 times in the game for 186 yards IIRC. My impression after watching Hyde all night was he can be a starter someday if that continues the whole time Bush is out.
2. The Eagles made a big mistake in the offseason. Sam Bradford made me wish they had kept Nick Foles. Meanwhile Foles beat the NFC Champs Seahawks. So in hindsight the Eagles should regret trading a pretty good starting quarterback for one who has spent most of his career on injury reports.
3. Kicks from 33 yards: When I heard the accuracy rate in preseason was 93 percent I thought that probably has something to do with who missed PAT attempts because the first miss I saw was by Jason Myers. Can we really count him in favor of the new rule when he just played his first NFL game? I want to see some veteran kickers miss it and hold off on judging the rule change until after Week 17.
4. San Francisco's biggest problem is special teams. The offense still looks good without Bush and the defense still looks great despite the flurry of retirements and free agent losses. Now they need to fix special teams to get back into the playoffs. I think that should include making Hyde the punt returner (in addition to his regular job) instead of a former rugby player
Welcome back, JW.
In reality, Carlos Hyde was going to be the 49ers primary RB regardless of the health of Reggie Bush. Great job by Hyde against the Vikings. I think Hyde has bellcow RB ability and as long as he stays healthy, he should have a highly productive career.
As for Reggie Bush, injuries are the norm with him. It was a question of when, not if Bush would go down again. The 49ers certainly can't count on Bush. Anything positive they get from him should be considered a bonus by them.
I saw a lot of sloppy, poor football around the league.
I got the sense a lot of teams took it light in preseason, and didn't seem sharp week one.
I don't expect perfection from everyone week one, but there was some bad football played by many teams.

So why wasn't Hyde the starter Sunday night?

Until you mentioned Carlos Hyde wasn't the starter, I didn't even recall who was in on the first Offensive play of the game at RB for the 49ers. So much can depend on what the Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator want to accomplish at the beginning of a game. Another factor might have been, because Reggie Bush is a long time veteran, maybe the coaches wanted to acknowledge what they consider his valuable contribution to the team.
The bottom line though is Carlos Hyde is the key piece of the 49ers running game and the key RB overall, regardless of whether he starts or not.

This was apparent. Around the entire league. Only teams who looked sharp to me were NE and Ten. Then again Ten played Tampa and NE might nothink have looked so good if Pit bothered to cover Gronk.
Seeing the sloppy play all around makes me worry less and less about the Jags first game

Gronk is one of the NFL's best tight ends, so I can't blame his success on the Steelers defense. But I do know the Ravens/Broncos game was sloppy. And those Eagles in Atlanta . . . What was Maxwell doing?

His success last week was 100% on Pit. They literally left him wide open pretty much all game.
A lot of teams looked ill-prepared and if they were up against a team that came in with a solid plan, they were toast (See - Indianapolis v. Buffalo).
Special Teams were... special. Really surprised at how bad the performance was in several games.
Peyton Manning looked done. I saw him miss some throws and even put a few in the dirt. I don't think he plays next year if he can even make it out of the one we're in.
Tackling is such an issue in the League. Just seems like all Defenders know to do is to try and run into the ball carrier.
Chip Kelly is going to scheme himself right out of a job. He just seems like he is overthinking everything.
All in all, I thought opening week was underwhelming as far as the quality of play.
Here was my impression....
1. Only four 100-yard rushing games (three of them losses).
2. I agree, Peyton Manning is done.
3. Maybe Adrian Peterson is too (but see below).
4. I saw a lot of dropped passes, not just the Jags.
In response to your original comments JDub:
Bradford looked good, and survived to play again in week 2. I don't think that trade was so much a mistakes as cutting Evan Mathis. To me it looked like their OL was the reason they lost.
SF won a very late game at home against a team from two time zones earlier. For the Vikings players, the game started after midnight Minnesota time. That was a huge advantage for SF. Maybe that explains Adrian Peterson too. I'm sure that fantasy players who drafted him 1st overall hope so.

I said that in the, I think, 'bold predictions' thread before the first game. He's toast. It started near the end of the year last year and he looked pathetic in the playoffs.
I feel bad for anybody that wasted a high pick on him in fantasy football (except in my leagues...that would make me happy since I didn't take him).

Yea he's done he was done at the end of last year too
It was also idiotic for the Broncos to change their offense while Manning is still there, he has been running the same offense for about 15 years and you want to change it in his last year lol Elway is a fool.
Adrian Peterson only carried the ball four times. For some reason Mike Zimmer kept him on the sideline. That did not make any sense, especially against a team with a great defense.

10 times.
I don't do impressions, ma'am, my field is construction.

Everyone I heard on TV said four.
