Quote:lol, why?

Because Denard has looked good to me.  i dont know.  lets see what happens.
Toby not playing so Yeldon and Pierce should get plenty of action

The 1st string needs to come out and play focused and prepared as if this was a real game.  No drops, no dumb penalties, and flawless execution of plays.  The great coaches do this week in and week out starting from practice all through the week to game day.  Going to be a good test vs a good Lions team.

raweyejag

Spot on with a couple more

Cut down on Penalties

Stay focused and cut down on simple assignment mistakes

Stay healthy

I know myself and Thundercat want to see TDs.
Quote:Thus far, some of this team's traits seem more evident with each week of camp/preseason:

-the offensive line seems bigger, more physical, and better equipped to run the ball than any line we had since the JDR era.

-The passing game, led by Bortles, seems to have hope.

-The cornerbacks are the strength of the defense

-defensive line seems to be the biggest problem area

With this in mind, this is what I want to see against Detroit

1.  Can the offensive line pass protect against a good pass rush?  Haloti Ngata is likely out this Friday.

2.  Can this team cover the TE.  Eric Ebron-a former first round pick, likely returns to action this weekend.  It seems throughout the history of this franchise, this team has not been able to cover the TE.  But the secondary is developing into a strength.  Telvin Smith is good in coverage.

3.  Just how strong is this secondary?  With Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate, Detroit offers perhaps the most formidable test for this secondary this preseason.  Can this team cover those guys.

4.  What will Yeldon do?  This is the first time since the scrimmage we've had the chance to see Yeldon.  As improved as our running game has appeared thus far, how much better will it look with Yeldon carrying the rock?

5.  What about the run defense?  The run defense has been underwhelming thus far, and it doesn't have the excuse of being worn down late in games after being on the field all day because the offense can't move the ball.

6.  Are special teams improved?  A while back, I observed Special teams cost the team a minimum of 2-3 games last year allowing blocked kicks.  So far this preseason, while the team has had 10 men on the field about 4 times, there hasn't been any blocks, and aside from a couple of penalties, there haven't been any special teams disasters.

7.  More rookie contributions.  I want to see Cann get some movement in the running game.  I want to see Bennett create some disruption.  If Sample is finally going to play, I want to see him display range, ball skills, and tackling.  Can Rashad Greene continue to make contributions?  What about UDFA finds Grant, Marshall and Armbrister?  Will they cement roster spots this week?

8.  Can the receivers catch the ball?  Bradley counted 6 drops last week. While drops happen, so do the negative consequences that stem from those drops.  In two weeks, drops have likely cost the team two TDs.  (Hurns v. NYG and Harbor v. Pittsburgh).

Bullseye,  the following is some Lions input regarding some of the 8 questions you touched upon for the Jaguars in the team's upcoming pre-season game.   I will use the number of the question you used for the questions I offer my two cents on:

.1.   Not only is Haloti Ngata out for Friday Night's game.   Ngata remains on the Non Football Injury list.   But beyond him,  DT Caraun Reid is definitely out of the game.   Reid has been starting opposite Tyrunn Walker at DT this summer,  with Ngata sidelined.  Reid suffered a high ankle sprain early in the pre-season road game against the Redskins last week.   In addition,  DE-DT Jason Jones,  a starter,  just came off the PUP list this week.   He's not play in Jacksonville.    Ziggy Ansah,  who had an outstanding performance in suburban Washington,   suffered an ankle injury in that game.   He has yet to practice since.    I think it would be smart for the Lions to keep him out the rest of the pre-season.    With many players upfront on Defense likely out of this game,   I expect Def, Coordinator Teryl Austin to work extensively on Blitzes/ Dogs.

 2.  Eric Ebron played in the first 2 pre-season games but missed a couple of practices since the game.  Ebron came back to practice yesterday.     My gut feeling is Ebron will play in Jax but it's not a given.   Ebron has improved greatly in 2015,   though he only has one reception in each of the first two pre-season games.   The practice reports and comments by coaches, teammates,  and others have been favorable about Ebron.     Having said that,  consistency in catching the ball is something worth keeping an eye on with Ebron.

3.   Calvin Johnson was kept out of the first 2 pre-season games and probably will be kept out of the entire pre-season.   Megatron is healthy at this time but keeping him that way is more important than any potential benefit of playing in a pre-season game.    You probably will see plenty of Corey Fuller,  Jeremy Ross,  and T.J. Jones.  Greg Salas and Ryan Broyles should also get playing time.   Golden Tate started the first two pre-season games and looks primed for another outstanding season.   Tate and RB Ameer Abdullah will probably be the top tests for the Jags Defenders.   Especially,  since both are extremely difficult to tackle because of their elusiveness and instincts.

5.   RG Larry Warford also suffered a high ankle sprain vs.  the Redskins and is out for the Jags game.   Manny Ramirez probably will start at RG,  with Laken Tomlnson moving into the starting lineup at LG.   That's plenty of beef at Guard,  even w/o Warford.   Taylor Boggs,  who was a street FA,  has had an excellent training camp and strong pre-season.   Boggs likely will get plenty of snaps at G and Center.    Travis Swanson is the starting Center and probably will play the entire first half.   Maybe even longer.   The one concern with Swanson is against powerful DTs and NTs.    Also,  RT LaAdrian Waddle,  who is coming off a partially torn ACL,   is not playing in this game.   Waddle just came off the PUP list earlier this week.   Cornelius Lucas will start at RT,   with Corey Robinson being the first Tackle off the bench.   The Lions traded Michael Williams to the Patriots yesterday.   Riley Reiff performed at a high level in his action at LT in the first 2 pre-season games and probably will see his most extensive action of the summer against the Jags.   Lucas and Robinson have huge wingspans and plenty of upside but both are going through growing pains.

One other thought.   This will likely be Rashean Mathis'  final NFL game in Jacksonville.    Mathis is still playing at a high level.   To the extent that Jim Caldwell elected to rest Mathis in the first pre-season game vs.  the Jets as a sign of respect and keeping the 13 season veteran fresh.    I hope the fans give Mathis a standing ovation and that one day he's inducted into the Jaguars Ring of Honor.    As much as Mathis has meant to the Lions in his 3 seasons with the team,   he's arguably the best Jaguars DB in the team's 20 season history.    Maybe even the team's best Defensive player,  though Tony Brackens,  Marcus Stroud,  and John Henderson all were great players as well.

Quote:This too X 1000000

Absolutely.   Considering,  both teams got banged up in their most recent pre-season game,  getting out of this game in one piece is more important than anything else associated with the game.
I want to see someone from a skill position show some potential of being a star. I'm already tired of not having one now that MJD is gone.

Quote:He played well last season. 1300 yards and 4 tds

Not to mention,  the Lions went 3-0 in the games that Calvin Johnson was sidelined with a high ankle sprain and 1-1 in the two games that Megatron was severely limited by that injury.   Golden Tate was by far the # 1 reason on Offense the Lions survived the injury to Calvin Johnson.   In other seasons before Golden Tate signed with the Lions,  in most of the games Calvin Johnson was out,   the Lions Offense was anemic.   Golden Tate should provide a great test for the Jaguars DB's.   Both because of his route running and even more so his elite after the catch ability.   If the Jags handle Tate well,  that will be a strong indicator that the Jags Secondary is noticeably improved.

Injuries really suck.

I completely understand why the Lions are keeping those guys out, I would like to see those guys play to see how our team stands up against the best.

I know this seems a completely different stance from when I shed no tears for teams that suffer major injuries, but this is preseason.  The games don't count, and they are measuring sticks of sorts.

In the regular season, I'm back to heartlessness.

Good point about Rashean Mathis.

He is the best DB in Jaguars history by far.

His latter days, he was unfairly villified by people here, but he was a good CB for us.

I hope he gets a standing O, but I doubt it.
Fair enough. He produced, has a good QB, I don't see much specialness. But Tron on the other side does up his value, Fitz/Boldin.
I would love to see both teams to come out of the game injury free.   As for the game its self i want the jags to get blowen out  by the lions. Before anyone says anything,my though is if the team gets blowen out  in the 3rd pre-season game it will give them extra motvation not to get blowen out in regular season espailley at home. Plus hopefuley get the getting blowen out by other team out of the system early on. also if you get blowen out in week 3 of pre-season you have 1 more meanlesggis game to get the starters even better. sometimes a blowout does a team good, and sometimes it doesn't.  Anyways i would prefer us to beat Wasghtion i don't like that team.  if we are going to lose another pre-season game i prefer it be to the lions. I have nothing againest lions.  Afterall they are with us in same catorgety Never been to the Super Bowl, only difference is Lions have been around longer,no offensse inteded there D6.

I never want to see a blowen out, ever. EVER. Smile

As usual D6, very nice well thought out post.

I'd put Mike Peterson and Donovin Darius above Mathis as well. Mathis in my book is roughly the same caliber as Daryl Smith...that is, top 10 but not quite top 5.

Mathis pretty much sealed our last playoff win along with MJD. He's in my top 5.
Quote:When did Tate become anything? #BecauseHawks?

No, he really wasn't even that good with the Seahawks. But for whatever reason, the second he stepped onto the field with the Lions he's basically been Super Tate.

I'd rank the Jaguars DBs something like...

1. Donovin Darius

2. Rashean Mathis

3. Aaron Beasley

4. Deon Grant

5. Carnell Lake

6. Brian Williams

It'll be interesting to see how the current crop of DBs with Colvin, McCray, House and Cyprien stack up in the long run.

That's what I'm saying 02. He was a guy in Seattle. Now he is special? Productive, sure. I don't see...
