I am looking forward to seeing Yeldon most.

About everywhere else, we have a pretty good idea of what we've got.

Mathis > Darius, by virtue of their positions, corner more premium than safety, along with the level of eliteness reached. When Mathis was at his peak, he was arguably the best in his craft (with Asante, Nnamdi n co in the AFC). Darius never attained such a status.

I hear you and can respect your opinion, however, I'd still say Darius was more valuable to the defense. Along with Leon Searcy I see him as one of the most underrated players in league history.

Quote:Injuries really suck.

I completely understand why the Lions are keeping those guys out, I would like to see those guys play to see how our team stands up against the best.

I know this seems a completely different stance from when I shed no tears for teams that suffer major injuries, but this is preseason.  The games don't count, and they are measuring sticks of sorts.

In the regular season, I'm back to heartlessness.

Good point about Rashean Mathis.

He is the best DB in Jaguars history by far.

His latter days, he was unfairly villified by people here, but he was a good CB for us.

I hope he gets a standing O, but I doubt it.

Pre-season and practice injuries are indeed the worst type of injuries in general.    At least in a regular season or playoff game,   an injury occurs in the context when so much is at stake.

Lions Pro Bowl caliber OLB DeAndre Levy also didn't practice the last couple of days and hence his status for the Jags game is uncertain.   Yet,  regardless of many Lions players that will sit out because of injuries or in Calvin Johnson's case very likely being a healthy scratch,   there are still many good opportunities for the Jaguars to get ready for the regular season as a result of this game.    The Lions starting Secondary is currently relatively healthy.   CB Darius Slay and Rashean Mathis should provide good matchup opportunties for the Jags WRs.   Especially,  with Pro Bowl S Glover Quin patrolling deep.    MLB Stephen Tulloch has recovered from an torn ACL and should test the Jags running and passing games.    LB Tahir Whitehead had the pre-season game of his life against the Jags last year,  including 3 sacks and a multitude of tackles.    For the Jags Defense,  between Matthew Stafford,  Ameer Abdullah,  Golden Tate,  Eric Ebron,  and Riley Reiff,   that should help provide some measuring sticks for the Jags and help get the team ready for Carolina,  Miami,  etc.

I definitely believe that it took until 2013 before Rashean Mathis to overcome the torn ACL he suffered in 2011.   While I believe most Jags fans on the Forum realize how much Mathis meant to the Jags,   there's no question in my mind that he has earned a standing ovation for the crowd at the upcoming pre-season game.    That much more because of the leadership and community benefits Mathis has provided and his roots being in the Jacksonville area.
Quote: I would love to see both teams to come out of the game injury free.   As for the game its self i want the jags to get blowen out  by the lions. Before anyone says anything,my though is if the team gets blowen out  in the 3rd pre-season game it will give them extra motvation not to get blowen out in regular season espailley at home. Plus hopefuley get the getting blowen out by other team out of the system early on. also if you get blowen out in week 3 of pre-season you have 1 more meanlesggis game to get the starters even better. sometimes a blowout does a team good, and sometimes it doesn't.  Anyways i would prefer us to beat Wasghtion i don't like that team.  if we are going to lose another pre-season game i prefer it be to the lions. I have nothing againest lions.  Afterall they are with us in same catorgety Never been to the Super Bowl, only difference is Lions have been around longer,no offensse inteded there D6.

No offense taken,  snowwolf.    The Lions won 4 NFL Championships in the pre-Super Bowl era but the team's track record in the Super Bowl era speaks for itself.   Some bad breaks have happened along the way but that doesn't excuse the overall team performance in the last 49 seasons.   The bright spot is the Lions organization has improved noticeably under current GM Martin Mayhew,  with 2 playoff appearances in the last 4 years.   This after the rock bottom 0-16 season in 2008.

If neither team suffers a significant injury in this pre-season game,  anything else in the game is gravy.
League, or Jags history? League, a bit deamatic imo, too big a sample Wink. I agree that Darius was as important a cog in our D as can be, he came down in the box and manned the rush with aplomb. As his coverage skills improved, he solidified the back field too.
Quote:I'd put Mike Peterson and Donovin Darius above Mathis as well. Mathis in my book is roughly the same caliber as Daryl Smith...that is, top 10 but not quite top 5.

I certainly respect your opinion and think highly of the other former Jaguars Defensive players you mentioned.

Yet,  when watching Rashean Mathis in many games with the Jags over the years,   the two things that jumped out is how he sometimes was able to shut down the opposing WR and the big plays that he made.    CB is a very difficult position to play.   Other than Champ Bailey and Charles Woodson,   I can't think of a CB in the AFC last decade that probably was better than Rashean Mathis.   Darrelle Revis only played 3 seasons last decade,  hence I'm not counting him.
Quote:As usual D6, very nice well thought out post.

Thank you very much,  jagibelieve!
Mathis>Darius

He lined up against HOF receivers in their prime with HOF QBs. Played a more premium position. Lastly he's played pretty well with the Lions to end his career.

He's the best jaguars defensive back in franchise history.
Quote:When did Tate become anything? #BecauseHawks?
he did win the Biletnikoff award, the best WR in college. The same award Blackmon and Marquise Lee won. He has been one of the most underrated players in the league. He carries a chip on his shoulder for people always looking over him and the teams that past up on him in the draft. Like Lee he went the 2nd so I'm hoping Lee can get healthy and show his play making ability like he did in college and have a similar path like Tate but stay with the Jags
