I haven't felt confident picking up 3rd downs in a while. Last night I was expecting them every time. (With the starters)

He is getting something out of gerhart and seems to be good a opening up space over the middle where bortles tends to do better vs the sidelines.
Allen Robinson, Denard, Blake and even Gerhart are clearly good fits for his scheme. Hurns appears a bit lost after being more familiar with fisch last year.
So far id say B- grade. We are actually seeing a wide variety of routes and combinations.

It's been a good mix thus far. He's also having Bortles throwing the intermediate and deep routes that keep the defense from stacking the box.

He's proven he can lift a young players game above what should be reasonable. Josh Freeman is a good example. He's not even capable of being in the NFL and he looked so promising with Olsen his first season.

Seeing them convert five of eight 3rd downs with Bortles in there gives me a great deal of confidence considering I'm so used to seeing one or two of eight in past seasons.

It's still preseason. With the offense on an upswing from what it was last year, I'm excited to see what the offense looks like come week one and going forward. Looks promising.

It makes such a huge difference when you're not constantly staring at 3rd and 8 haha. It's so nice to see some manageable 3rd downs for a young offense.

No grade. This is preseason. Vanilla offense going against a vanilla defense with no real game-planning involved makes it impossible to make a determination.

Agree. 3rd game is where you see some of this, but still not 100% "gameday" play calling.

The thing about play-calling is, if the plays work, people think it was good play calling. If they don't work, people blame the play-caller. As if a different play would have worked better, when usually it's just execution that makes a play work or not work.
Besides, in preseason, you call plays for the purpose of evaluating players. A lot of times, in preseason, you call plays you wouldn't call in the regular season.
For a guy in the stands to evaluate the play calling, when they have no idea what play was called and whether it failed due to execution or "bad strategy" is kind of ridiculous.

I don't know. It's pre-season and I would like to see how the offense does with an actual game plan and all of our starters.

Quote:Caldwell deserves credit here for finding talent that fits Olson's scheme.
Weren't most of the starters already here? Parnell is the only starter that wasn't, and he was in a ZBS last season.
This is assuming Bowanko will start.

I think in this case it was the right coach for the talent (Bortles) on the roster.

Olson was hired to get Blake back on track and fall in better sync with Bradley's philosophy.

Yeah, I was kind of thinking the same when I typed that. He's brought in some complimentary players, but the bulk of the talent was here. One question many of us have asked is, "why Olson" given his resume. Well, I think this answers that question.

Looks alot more competent.

No grade on play-calling as of yet because he's probably just going off of a sheet of predetermined plays that the Staff wants to see run so that they can evaluate the players. That being said, I do have a good feeling from the Offense just in how comfortable Bortles is looking from my 50,000ft view point.
Also, I love the way that he is using Alualu on running downs. I know that it's popular to think that Tyson is leading Gerhart up through the hole, but from what I've seen that's not the case. Alualu is being used as a kickout blocker to seal off the edge defender. What that means to me is that either a Guard or a Tackle is now going to be one on one with a Linebacker. That's a mismatch that is created by personnel usage, and that's the kind of thing that I like.
