I'd keep Myers because by the time the Jags are ready to be playoff contenders, Scobee will simply be older and declined more than he has already. Myers has upside and is the better choice for the long-term.

Quote:Scobee was bad last year but he still is very accurate at short distances.

Myers went 24 out of 38 in his collegiate career. No thanks,I rather have the proven veteran than the unknown big leg. Kickers should be reliable. Scobee has done that for years, and has not cost us any victories of importance.
Who cares what he did in college? The dude played arena league last year and there goal posts are much narrower.  If he can out kick Scobee in Pre Season I think you have to give him the job

Keep him on the practice squad maybe, but he'd have to kick circles around Scobee for me to be comfortable pulling the trigger on Scobee's release. I mean, literally, Scobee stands next to Myers, Myers kicks it, the ball revolves around the two of them once then bangs Scobee in the side of the head. That's about what it would take for me to replace Scobee with a guy who hit 24 of 38 in college.

I can't find Myers' AFL stats...did he actually play last year?

It looks like he was in training camp with the San Jose Sabercats last season, but didn't make the team.

So, if true, that kind of kills the "narrower uprights" argument right there.

I'm not saying the guy won't develop into something, but young guys with big legs are pretty common. Replacing your solid veteran kicker who struggled more because of crap blocking than anything else with a guy who hit 24 of 38 in college is a risky move.

Like I said earlier, remember this time last year when Kasey Redfern was going to beat Scobee?
At first I thought Jason was just a big camp leg but he might be worth keeping even as just a kickoff specialist? Scobee has had some injuries in the past and I would hate to see him leave but he won't be around much longer regardless and Myers' leg strength and accuracy was impressive in the scrimmage. If he has a good preseason I hope we find a way to keep him around. Even if it means letting Scobee go play elsewhere. When we're trying to upgrade the roster no position is safe.

No, I don't remember that.

It isn't a given that Myers beats out Scobee.

But he is one of the few kickers I can recall the team bringing in that actually appears to have a stronger leg than Scobee.

He has to combine that with accuracy and consistency.

But it was a good first impression for Jaguars fans.

Considering Scobee came off of a bad year and that he is older, I can understand the enthusiasm.
Competition is good at ALL positions.

Interesting.

Scobee was not bad last year, the team was just bad...in general. 20-26 and 3-6 from 50 + yards out is not impressive, but given that we could not even protect a kicker or punter last year in coverage, with blocks happening, I think I can give Josh somewhat of a pass. In 2013, Scobee went 23-25 and 4-5 from 50+ yards out. Had a 92 percent kick percentage as well and was being considered as a pro  bowl selection. Lets cool the hype on the next training camp wonder.

Put the college fratboy in the game with 3 seconds left on the clock from 60 plus yards out and see if he makes that kick. Ill take Scobee any day and I still think he is one of the NFL's most reliable kickers.

He has a cannon for a leg, so I am interested to see how he does in the preseason.

I still have my doubts though. With the extra points moved back, it puts more onus on the kicker. And Scobee is pretty automatic from that distance.

The worst possible outcome is you cut Scobee, give Myers the job and he misses an extra point that costs you a game.

I'm indifferent as to who I want at kicker... I like scobee too, but of this new kid is better so be it...

I hate to bring this up, but just to temper the excitement on the new kid... remember that anger has a huge booming leg, but it's what one does in have situations that matter.

Again, just trying to bring perspective here. Obviously, on Friday he out played scobee on the 60 yarder...

They weren't kidding when they said competition. I like they they're truly making every man seemingly earn his spot.

The thing with Scobee is he's never been rattled in those last second make or break kicks. He's had a ton of em. If the new kid has ice in his veins and not get rattled, it may be time to move on from our beloved Scobee to complete the youth movement.

You all realize in 4/5 years all of these young guys will be hitting their prime. Sheewwww.....

From Ryan O's Monday practice report:

Quote:THUMBS DOWN

*K Jason Myers came back down to earth. He hit a 60-yarder on Saturday night, but missed at least three field goals on Monday.

Ugh...

As I've been saying...he needs consistency to beat out Scobee.
Quote:From Ryan O's Monday practice report:

If he isn't consistent at practice, he doesn't deserve the starting spot. Scobee has proven he doesn't break under pressure and has won us a lot of games in the past.

RIP Jason Myers Bandwagon

^^^^ HAHA! Welp, so much for a booming leg. It's booming off center apparently.

heard today on timtimxxl that meyers signed a 3 yr contract 2yrs gaurenteed now its only 450k this year and 510k next year but maybe they want to hold on to him ps maybe to let him learn under scobee and will be our kicker in a year or two.
