"Gerhart actually looked good today.  He looks to be fully recovered from the injury bug that hampered his game last season, and he’s running with quite a bit of steam behind him.  It’ll be interesting to see how they utilize him..... "

This scares me. I was hoping to hear about him making key blocks to spring Yeldon... I can't go another year of loss yardage stretch plays and 2 yard dives with the occasional +15 yard run when we already down two scores.

They didn't have him running stretch plays, and he's not a fullback, soooooooo.........

You do understand that a new offensive coordinator means change, right?

You're just going to confuse him.

Hope springs eternal.
Great write up.  Looking forward to hearing more.

FBT, good write up. Sounds like you may have been sitting in my area on the south bleachers. on the Lee comments, you could visibly see he was frustrated with himself and seem to get a ton of attention from Sullivan. I'll add Sterling looked pretty fluid and quick for a big receiver. On the RB side, Gerhart was the only one that caught my eye in a positive way and Pierce is a bit bigger back than I remember. I also noticed the Defense seems to be a little further along than offense. Even with no pads, the offensive line was getting abused. The left and right tackles have some work to do!
Couple of questions for you Tim:

Jeremy Harris - CB - do you think he makes this roster? Your impressions on his play today?

Who are your top 5 WRs?

What are your impressions of Neal Sterling?

Thanks

Ya, reasonable questions after 1 day at camp, top 5 and a roster spot...

Harris looked okay out there.  Nothing spectacular good or bad.  He was around the ball and making plays, and in the cases where the receiver won the battle, it was more a good play on their part than anything he did wrong.  Still, Not sure if he'll be on the final 53 man roster or not.  Definitely a prospect to watch.

Top 5 receivers right now?  Robinson, Hurns, Greene, Lee, and probably Doss right now.  There are a couple of young guys including Sterling and Benn worth watching.  These things are going to change from practice to practice.  The top 4 is pretty much set, so the 5th spot is the one that will get the most attention.  The only reason Doss cracks my top 5 at the moment is because he was getting targeted more often than any of the other 2nd tier guys.  He also had a couple of drops at inopportune moments, but it's day 1.  All things in perspective.

Funny you should ask about Neal Sterling because he was a guy we were all watching out there early in practice based strictly on his size.  Sterling is a big dude who moves well.  We watched him during individual drills where they were working on route running and he carries that 6'4" 235# frame really well.  Didn't get a good feel for him during team drills.  He had a couple of opportunities late in 11 x 11, and he didn't embarrass himself, but it's just the first day.  He'll have plenty of opportunity to rise or fall.
Assuming the Jags keep 5 CBs, who is that 5th CB in your mind on the first day of training camp practices?
Another question:

Who is the 3rd TE based upon the first day of training camp?

The defense being ahead of the offense is nothing unusual this early on.  Especially with a new offense being installed, and an entirely new coaching staff to get accustomed to.  I liked the way Olson managed practice for the offense.  I thought it was a good tempo to get started, and you can already see there's going to be an emphasis on getting the ball down the field.  You'll still see the more efficient passing with the dink and dunk stuff, but they did put the ball down the field quite a few times today with mixed success.

Lee was frustrated, and I'm not really picking on him.  The guy has been out with an injury, so the rust is to be expected.  What pleased me was that he didn't just fall apart out there.  He continued to work on it, and things did improve for him as practice progressed.  For him, most of the struggles are about a lack of reps at this point.  You can see the kid has talent.

Sterling is a big guy who moves extremely well.  It'll be interesting to see how they use him in the preseason because if he has the hands, he could be another big target for Bortles who can actually move.

Gerhart had a good practice.  It's tough to evaluate the RBs in these practices because the pads aren't on, and contact is extremely limited.  We know what he can bring to the table, and anyone who recognizes he played most of last year injured and understands how that impacted his game will give him another opportunity to prove himself.  WIth the rotation we have currently, he's a weapon both as a back and as a receiver coming out of the backfield.  He just needs to stay healthy.

I thought Yeldon and Robinson both looked okay.  Nothing spectacular, but again, it's not about that as much as it is just watching how they approach and attack the line, and how they move on the field.  Yeldon looks like the part he's being asked to play.  He's going to be your primary back.  He's not flashy or explosive.  Robinson looks better this camp than he did last season.  He's clearly working on things, but he's still got a ways to go.  We'll see more of where he's at when we get to the first preseason game.  He can jitter bug out there all day long.  How will he look when he's getting hit?  We'll see.

The first team offensive line had a few mishaps during practice, but overall they did okay.  It's day 1, so I wasn't expecting some dynastic front 5 out there.  This is the first time they've worked together as a unit.  It takes time to develop that chemistry.

Based on practice today, Marshall.  The guy flies.  He's a project, but watching him jump the route and get that pick 6 was pretty darn impressive for someone who is relatively new to the role.

Harbor at this point.  When they lined up in 3 TE sets, he was the third guy out there with Marcedes and Julius.
Harbor or Jacobs right?  Depending if they want to go pass or run heavy.

Tim,

So what are your thoughts on the Safety play, and in particular how did Sergio Brown play at FS.

Are there other safety prospects that flashed and caught your eye?

Thanks for taking notes in the heat and posting them. I'm very curious to see the new throwing motion for Bortles, and especially curious to see how long it lasts. I think Bortles can be one of the rare guys who successfully changes their throwing motion, unlike say a Tim Tebow or Byron Leftwich. Let's hope so, because that windup stuff won't work in the NFL. Bortles telegraphed a lot of throws with that windup as the season wore on.

I'd love to see some vines about Bortles new motion vs his old.
Thanks, Tim. Good to see Tuel making a run at the 3rd QB position.

Thanks FBT. Great and detailed write up, as usual.

Thanks to you it really feels like football season now.

Thank you and much appreciated FBT!

Especially for us Jag fans all the way over here on the West Coast.

Tuel wouldn't surprise me if he gave Henne a run for his money for the #2.
