I am fine if he doesn't come back. I'd rather see them make a run for Terron Armstead or Cordy Glenn now to upgrade the LT position going forward. Armstead was only second to Joe Thomas in pass blocking and second to Tyron Smith in run blocking last year based on the PFF rankings.

And Glenn only gave up a QB hit or sack every 140 pass attempts in Buffalo last year which was only second to Joe Thomas. We have the cap space. Both of those guys are relatively young. I'd throw a king's ransom their way and be done with it.

What makes you think the Bills would want to get rid of Glenn? Then they would just be in the same spot we are with no LT. Didn't he also just sign an extention?

You're right. I must have missed that. That's a shame. Still leaves Armstead though. He's the better player of the two anyway.
Disregard. I am an idiot. PFF let me down. Armstead and Glenn were both extended.

Not very many good options out on the market. Maybe Riley Reiff from Detroit or Andre Whitworth from Cincinnati? Either way, Beachum I think graded out around 63rd out of 78 possible LT's available for grading. It's not like he was some immovable object in 2016. In fairness, he was coming off an ACL still. We'll see what happens. Trust in TC.

Yeah from what I have read Whitworth is the only better LT than Beachum available. Clady is also available now but I don't know how he played last season and if he would be an upgrade

If it means the difference between getting a QB and not, they may be inclined to throw him in, especially since Cyrus Kouandijo and Seantrel Henderson both looked good in spot duty at LT and have athleticism that had them viewed by many as first round talents.
After the first press conference by Coughlin, Beachum went ecstatic on twitter because of the "winning philosophy" and was as happy as anyone. Curious that it may be the arrival of Coughlin (we don't know that yet of course) that has blocked the team picking up his option.

I still think they'll try working a deal before FA starts or they have something in mind.

I have to say I wasn't expecting us having to address the LT position once again this offseason, as much as Beachum wasn't a world beater he was fine enough for us to go through at least another season with him and take care of other positions.

We'll see what happens.

It is a bit surprising after exactly what you just mentioned.

I'm hoping they already have the framework of a new deal in place, possibly a lower base with a lot of incentives that could potentially earn him more than the option but if he underperforms would be better for the team.

Guess we'll see. Seems foolish without a backup plan (which there may be and we don't know)
You guys need to face it....Beachum flat out sucked.

Pittsburgh and now Jax in last 2 years. Now he's on his way to his 3rd team in as many seasons.

Moves like this needs to be done. Our offense was not very good, so any change is good.

We can't be worse than last year.

Yep, if they are not already in talks for a different deal with him or have any trade in place and we reach FA with Beachum not signed it could get messy as basically we'd be left with only Linder as a worthy starter and only Cann-Parnell as serviceable but easily replaceable and upgradable.

We'll see.

He sucked in the run game. He kept Blake pretty clean all year. In fact, pass pro wise, the OL was pretty solid. Beachum was a part of that.

This move just doesn't make much sense to me.

I think Coughlin wants to run the ball and keep the pressure off of Bortles. Beachum was weak in the run game, I agree.

Maybe in pass pro, his replacement isn't that far of a drop off? But in my opinion Beachum is damaged goods and will be playing for his 3rd different city.
In no way, shape or form will this move ruin next season.

It turns out Beachum was hyped up and sold to us to be much better than he actually is, kinda like a lot of the guys we bring in or that are on the roster.
Good thing we can resign Luke right.

Quote:Could just restructure a contract before March 9th, I doubt we'd let one of our best lineman go.

I think this is the most likely scenario.
The new Oline coach and Coughlin do seem to favour big physical tackles where as Beachum is more technical and is the smallest left tackle in the NFL. That may have something to do with it if we don't bring him bacj.
I happen to believe that the O-Line is the first step towards building an offense. I know Beachum wasn't very good, even though I believe he looked like our 2nd best O-Lineman behind Linder. This should be an indication of how bad our Line was overall. After thinking about it, I'm fine with the move. Beachum would've needed to be upgraded at some point anyway, so why not now? I believe Cann would be much better if he was just moved back to his natural position of LG as well. That leaves LT, RG and RT as positions to be upgraded. The key is LT. I cannot stress how much we need to use our first round pick on a LT, (if we don't trade for a solid veteran.) There is just nothing out there in free agency, that is a long term answer. They only LT's I see in the draft that I believe can be very good pros are Ryan Ramczyk, Cam Robinson, Garrett Bolles and possibly Roderick Johnson. I believe all will be gone by pick #35. From there, the LT prospects fall off a cliff. LT is such an important position, it has to be the #1 priority.

Can the team still use the Transition Tag on Beachum before March 9?

If so - then that is also an option.

It would be about 13.7 million for a tackle in 2017 I think. That figure, incidentally, is only 700K more than what Beachum was set to be guaranteed in year one of his option if picked up.

Just something to consider as a safety valve if they don't get something else done.
