Aaron Colvin pushing for starting corner spot

Mccray has been decent and at times has provided a physical presence in the short throw and running game but overall i dont feel he is a lock on the outside.

He was picked on by qbs at times too.

Was he? I can't remember a single time he was picked on by QBs in fact the Cowboys had to move their nr1 receiver who is probably a top 3 receiver to the other side because he wasn't having any impact.

I remember when House was signed almost immediately Colvin was regulated to nickel...

My thought was.. "why?"

There was the "big free agency contract" excuse.

There was the "still coming back from ACL" excuse.

There was the weird... "he's best at nickel" response...

I don't care what round a guy was drafted in, what his contract is, where he came from... you put the best guys on the field...

If that means Colvin starts and slides to nickel in certain packages to maximize our DBs I'm OK with that.

John O was beating that "nickel starter" drum pretty hard... and I always thought if anyone would be pushed by House it would be McCray.

That being said... a lot of Pack fans said they weren't going to miss House and that he got burned on the reg at the nickel. -SHRUG-

We will see... but back on point, it should surprise no one that barring a setback from the injury Colvin should be a premier CB... he was set to be pre ACL tear.

In our defense the nickel CB could be considered a starter anyway since he's getting plenty of snaps in our scheme.

That may be so...

But in base, Colvin should start on the outside if he is better than the others there. No sense to take him off the field if he ends up being our best CB

I think that's where the Ronde Barber comparison comes into effect. Outside on 1st/2nd down and Nickel on 3rd.
IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS

House fits more of the mold of a bigger CB that they want to run in this defense.  I get why they'd probably put House there to start.  Having bigger CB's is what makes guys like Cyp able to come down closer to the box.  Honestly, as long as the best players are on the field, I don't care who's "starting".

I just watched the Jags:LIVE and I really like Colvin's attitude. Dude seems to have a good head on his shoulder. Funny personality, a little cocky..if he keeps progressing and becomes a stud here I can easily see him being a fan favorite. Kind of our own (using a wayyyyy to early comparison but it's the dead season so why not) Richard Sherman.

Very likely. ^

Also - if you read between the lines of the Gus Bradley presser from last year when Colvin began playing  -- he made me feel like part of the reason that  they liked Colvin at nickel at that time (and moving forward) was that he had the "spatial awareness" to play the middle of the field well.

It sounded to me like perhaps he didn't actually trust Gratz or McCray to play there just yet.   The way this scheme emphasizes that whole "sideline as a defender" technique for it's corners - the nickel actually has more ground to cover on a lot of plays.

The way Colvin had some impact from the nickel spot early on - I wouldn't mind seeing him there in certain packages.

Would be cool if Gratz, Campbell, Harris or Reynolds emerge as a quality nickel.  Of course it would also be very interesting if House ends up as a  6 million dollar a year nickel.
