One of the big topics out of the 2015 SEC meetings is the issue of satellite camps. The big issue is that the southern boys don't like their northern counterparts to set up shop for a weak in their territory (basically what it boils down to). 

 

Personally I think the camps are legit, but what the northern folks have to be wary of is the SEC opening shop up north and starting to poach some of the best talent from up that way by running their own satellite camps. For the most part the SEC stays regional. They do venture out every now and then, but for the most part they can get everything they need down south. Northern conferences could potentially be opening up a can of worms they'd rather not.

I don't know much about how these camps work. Are there similar ones for basketball? I am wondering if the SEC would have a problem with someone like Calipari having a satellite camp in a city like Chicago or New York, that is loaded with talent.

I dont see what the big deal is.  folks were complaining about James Franklin holding a camp in Georgia last year... and even with all his recent recruiting ties in the south, you know how many kids he pulled from Georgia?  Zero.  Schools up north have been coming down here for years.  They will always be able to cherrypick a few here or there.  But at the end of the day, most kids do what their mama wants... and that's stay close to home.

 

Northern schools dont really have to worry about southern schools running camps up there.  The local state schools(Ohio St, Mich, Penn St, etc...) up there usually get the handful of elite talent.  But there just isnt the depth for other schools to go after.  One of the best stories I remember is Rex Grossman going to Florida.  He kept sending tapes of himself to the school hoping to get an invitation and his high school coach even reached out to the Gators football team.  He asked why they werent looking at Grossman and the response he got back was "We dont recruit Indiana."

I think there is a much bigger attraction then weather at certain times of the year. Might have to do with the level of talent.

You're partially correct.


It's also because cities like Chicago and NY (home to plenty of black people) are not sprawling metropolises like Atlanta, Dallas, LA or Miami. More space make them more conducive to football while basketball thrives in the northern cities. Manhattan is not an ideal place for football.
