As far as the motive is concerned, he may have thought he was the father at the time of her death. The paternity test came later. Of course he may have known that he definitely wasn't the father based on other factors.


 

If he was not in the same city then he clearly wasn't involved and there would have been no reason for NFL teams to pass on him. Why couldn't/wouldn't he establish that before the draft? OK, he could have hired someone else to kill her, but that's a long shot.

Within a matter of days, you think an NFL team could do sufficient investigating of Collins to justify taking that risk?

 

They had how many months to investigate Ray Rice, and got the response wrong?

 

How long did the Jaguars have to investigate Justin Blackmon, R Jay Soward, etc.?

 

Presumably the same amount of time the Patriots had to investigate Christian Peter and Aaron Hernandez.

 

A few days of investigation in a matter this serious would not be enough time for an NFL team to justify the risk of a high draft pick.

 

Regarding the motive, the possibility of his paternity being eliminated does not necessarily eliminate motive for him.

 

Perhaps he was [BAD WORD REMOVED] he WASN'T the father, especially if conception by the actual father occurred while they were still dating at the time.  Maybe he was pissed she had him believing he was the father all that time when he wasn't.  Perhaps, if he were the murderer, there was a reason wholly unrelated to her pregnancy to cause him to commit such a heinous crime.

 

Way too much information to process within too short a time frame to investigate this matter thoroughly enough to justify spending a draft choice on him.

Investigate? Days? He or his agent could have provided proof that he was in another city almost immediately. Plane tickets, taxi fare, purchase receipts, witnesses. It's pretty easy to prove.

Considering he didn't provide that proof to authorities until 5/4-AFTER the draft- maybe not.  And as you indicated, that alone still does not address the idea he could have offered to pay someone to do the deed.  The criminal investigation has not finished, to the best of my knowledge.

I'm pretty sure nearly everyone is comfortable saying the NFL teams didn't have enough time to investigate or know the truth in the time frame they had.  The risk was HUGE.

Exactly.

 

A background investigation-which is what teams do in preparation for the draft-is totally different from a criminal investigation, much less a double homicide investigation, which essentially is what he was asking teams to do in a matter of 2-3 days.
