2015 Draft eligible free safeties

#21

Quote:Many times CBs are converted to FS if they do not have the speed to run with fast WRs one on one. Gratz appears to be an excellent candidate for conversion to FS.

In Free Agency, Chris Culiver - CB - San Francisco, is another such candidate. I remember he started out at South Carolina as a Free Safety before switching to CB.

I don't think Gratz would be a good candidate for FS. Maybe SS. Gratz hasn't shown to have a nose for the football.

Make of this what you want, but these are the thoughts of Bleacher Report on the current crop of safeties (not all Free Safeties)

Quote:Even though FS is a big need right now, I'm not seeing us drafting one either until 3rd round or after this year.

I see no reason to reach just to get a starter, and miss out on a better player elsewhere like LB, OT, RB, or really anywhere to be honest. Also, I think our defense has shown it can be pretty good even with Evans at FS.

I'm with you though, I think FA is our best bet at upgrading that position as well as RT and TE.

This is what I absolutely hate: the idea that just because free safety is a need, picking one before Round 3 would be reaching. The truth is "reaching for need" only occurs when you pick the wrong player to fill the need. For example, when we needed to rebuild the defensive line, JPP would have been a better choice than Tyson Alualu at #10. Picking a free safety early is not reaching if he will be the next Earl Thomas - one of the other first round picks in 2010.

That said, if there is a right tackle projected as a top five pick in almost every mock draft, I want the Jaguars to pick him first and a free safety later. Right tackle is the worst position on our weak offensive line.

Few things. Holliman looks like he's afraid to tackle. But is the only true ball hawk. Anyone know anything about the Safety on LSU ???

Next, Gipson would probably be the best bet. He has the most interceptions this year I believe. That is exactly what we are lacking, interceptions. The best bet is to take the defensive studs early on and not reach for a need of FS if it's not there. Temporary in FA and maybe draft one next off season. Tough spot we are in. A quality FS is hard to come by.

The Holliman write up is pretty good as far as I can tell. Not trying to say he couldn't be a good safety if he got the tackling deficiencies corrected. I am not sure if he just doesn't like contact or if this shoulder is still bothering him, he did miss most of a year because of it.

Maybe he could/should be moved to CB.

Just a thought, but how about Anthony Harris of Virginia ? He's listed as a strong safety, but the description of him (and his interception record) suggest s move to FS might be possible. And he would probably be there in round 3+

Gipson is a restricted free agent.  The Jaguars would have to give up a 1st or 2nd round draft pick to sign him.  My guess is that he stays in Cleveland.

I think the best option in Free Agency outside of McCourty is Kendrick Lewis of the Texans. He would not cost nearly as much and played well in his one and only year in Houston.

Cost does not matter as much as having a shutdown safety. If there is an elite free safety on the market, I don't care how much money he wants.

Watch out for the Oregon Safety tonight could be a pretty good safety option in the draft

The ONLY ABILITY that matters when talking about Free Agents is AVAIL-ABILITY.

I have changed my mind, I want DaNorris Searcy of Buffalo over Kendrick Lewis of the Texans, but he would be my second choice.

WHY you ask?

Because I think both will be AVAILABLE, where I am not so sure that McCourty will be.

Look for the Patriots to find a way to keep McCourty off the market.

iF McCourty, and his Agent, have a lick of sense then he will be certain to hit the FA market so he can get paid.

Far more than the Patriots will pay him; that much is for dead certain!

Anyone with football sense realizes the quality FS market is high in demand and extremely low in supply.

An Earl Thomas - level free safety doesn't come around very often... maybe every 5-10 years? Give me a free safety that can tackle and can atleast make a play, and I'll be happy. I expect it to be addressed in free agency, and maybe a rookie taken in the later rounds. Gus is probably never going to get his Earl Thomas
