Quote:Teachers get disrespected, and treated like crap.  And that's just by the parents!  That's not to mention the kids.

Another problem is that parents either don't get involved enough, or get TOO involved and try to control what their kids learn.

And then you have the over-involved parents.  The ones who think its' their job to tell teacher's how to do theirs.  They disagree politically.  They think that their kid should get an "A" on everything.

Thank you sir.  No parent ever will say their kid is dumb- or even admit that little Billy or Susie is below average.

But statistically speaking....

Quote:Starting salary in Duval for a teacher is about $34,500 IIRC- not terrible but nothing to brag about.

They get about $800 - $1000 per year raises for cost of living.  Also- they are eligible for a decent bonus (aprox $5000 paid annually) if the teacher is national board certified.  So a veteran teacher with 10 solid years experience is making about $44,000 to $50,000.

That pay is lousy.  I know it doesn't seem terrible with 2 months of summer off and all those holidays.  But then I remember the parents, all the red tape, the futility of it all, the lack of teacher protection- and the fact that I hate kids.

I would consider teaching in Duval at closer to $90,000 to $100,000 per year.

My point is:  Anybody smart enough to become a teacher would know better than to get involved wth that profession.

I agree with this sentiment especially in todays climate.

The kids today have zero respect for their own parents, let alone adults that aren't their own parents. Add to this that there is no discipline allowed in the school or home anymore (other than nothing methods like "time out" and talking to's) and the kids fear nothing. They know they have the power. An adult cannot discipline them or else the adult gets sued.

Many parents are terrible and will believe everything bad that happens is the schools fault and Little Johnny is an angel. These are the type of trash that sue the school at every turn so that they can become walmart-millionaires. And the liberal judges always seem to allow these and enable further terrible behavior/ cases.

Quote:Teachers would riot if they had to work from 7:30 - 5:00 PM. That's a 9 and a half hour work day, not to mention the grading they have to do afterwards, as well as having office hours. It'd also kill high school sport programs as well.

Teachers can have 2 one hour planning breaks in between the day.

High school sports can be moved to Friday and Saturday

Quote:Ask and you shall receive, most homeschooling kids do better then average. This article cites a report they average in the 86th percentile.

I bet that has more to do with parents that care enough to tutor their kids themselves than it does having the kid in public education.

Quote:What's creating sheep is that we only have two political parties to choose from.  Certainly not our public schools.  That's another issue entirely, and is being discussed in another thread.

True but, even then, politicians cater to the teachers. It doesn't matter if they're Republican or Democrat; they're always doing whatever will get them the most teacher-votes.

LOL What?  When do they cater to teachers at all?  They have little to no focus on education. Teacher Salaries are low.  Class sizes are high, despite teacher complaints. Then you have common core, which many teachers have opposed.  No, they're never doing anything that will get them the 'most teacher votes'. The right panders to the religious right and major corporations, while the left panders to environmentalists and socialists.

I think people confuse teachers with teachers unions.

My point being that we often hear how they want the teacher's votes, so they put people in position that teachers often want or vote for. It doesn't mean they do whats asked of them, only that teachers often put them there. How often are local Board of Education members appointed against the support of teachers unions or the like?

All of the couples I know who do not have kids seem to be having a great time in life.   They have money, they travel, they play golf when they feel like it.   Just enjoying the heck out of life.  The couples who have kids, not so much.

I'm glad some people want to have kids, but it sure seems like a huge sacrifice.

That reminds me of my friend who got one of those gizmos you put in your car that supposedly lowers the cost of your insurance if you drive safely.   He had this thing for a few months, and his insurance company told him they couldn't give him a discount because he made too many left turns.   Apparently, left turns are dangerous.   I told him, next time you need to make a left, make three rights.   No more left turns.   He never got a discount, though.

It's true though.  In fact UPS Drivers have their routes planned out to avoid left turns.  They've saved money by doing so.

Those things are scams though.  Some people get the discount, but it's not equal to the cost of the program you're part of in the first place.  And worst of all -- if you drop out, you have to pay that discount back.  Yeah... Car Insurance can be such a racket.  A friend of mine had her car hit by a hit and run driver in the parking lot, and most of the cost to fix her car had to come out of pocket.  She bemoaned "WHAT THE [BAD WORD REMOVED] DO I PAY YOU PEOPLE FOR?"
