Again, it's one of the biggest stories in sports, and has been since the NBA finals concluded.  If it wasn't worth talking about, they wouldn't, but media is driven by ratings, hits, and listening audience.  If the story was driving the numbers down in any of those categories, they'd move on to the next thing. 

whats sad is it's it more than the ratings... like in sports we gauge players on particular stats that are relative to the position... television is driven by advertisement which looks at ratings as its main statistic...the day companies, who pay for the adds, concentrate more on content of the program rather than ratings is the day media will have to change their whole approach... sadly the most important part of advertisement is size of audience reached so rating will always be the most important stat.... thats why a billboard on 95 that is going to be seen by 90k cars a day is more expensive than one way down us1 that may see 10k if its lucky.

I'm so sick of ESPN's coverage of Lebron James.  A few years ago it was Tebow, then Manziel, now Lebron.  I know covering them is inevitable, but round the clock coverage of nothing but them is just making me sick.  Sportscenter literally had their rundown (the bar on the far left screen) with nothing but Lebron tabs.  Give it a rest.  I usually watch Fox Sports 1, but every now and again I'll flip it over to ESPN to see what the deal is. Apparently, Lebron is the only thing that's happening.  Not baseball, World Cup, or even a few snippets on college football or the NFL.  I see why Dan Patrick and so many other ex-ESPN guys hated working for them. 

 

Anybody else share my anger?

 

I'm on the other side.  The NBA free agency market was just transformed.  Miami is now the Magic and the Cavs have risen to the top of the Eastern Conference ---factor in Mike Miller and a potential trade (Wiggins for Love) and you are looking at another trip to the Finals for Lebron.

 

Great decision to go back to the Cavs.

That's never going to happen.  The bottom line is the bigger ticket advertisers want to maximize exposure to their products, so they're going to advertise where the ratings are.  That's why you don't see major advertisers running endless commercials at certain times of day, or on certain stations. 

 

The networks recognize who has the deepest pockets, and they are going to cater their broadcasting to take advantage of the bigger advertising dollars.  In order to do that, they have to have ratings to back it up.  Companies aren't going to market a product with big dollar campaigns on a network that nobody is watching.  So, major beer and drink companies are going to put their money into ESPN, while Sham Wow and the Slap Chop are going to be dominating the Fern Network advertising. 

 

Ratings drive everything in TV, and James is the biggest name in the NBA, and arguably one of the biggest names in pro sports.  As long as that's the case, networks like ESPN are going to cover him like a blanket.  They know it will draw in the fans.

Yes, I agree that they do need to collect their checks in order to turn on the lights, but they need to consider the world of sports, and be mindful of saturating one particular topic. I get that the James move was a hinge in the NBA offseason, but there were other sports items that deserved coverage. You don't have to talk about the "big ticket" items all of the time.

That's kind of my point. As a news entity - and I realize that I'm really, really stretching the truth with that particular label - their number one priority shouldn't be to chase ratings. I guess the point that I'm getting at is that I expect news entities to provide the proper perspective on the news. Was James signing the biggest thing that day? Absolutely it was. Was it the only thing? No, and other sports / events and the people that care about them should have gotten their fair exposure.

Wade will be out half the season...Anderson couldn't make a jump shot to save his life. 

 

I would not be shocked if the Magic have a better record.  Oladipo should have been rookie of the year, and has a really good chance of becoming a star in the league.

I will be very surprised if Orlando has a better record than Miami this year. Over on the RealGM Magic forum, their fans are projecting ~35 wins this year. Oladipo is a stud (followed him through college as a Big Ten fan), but the roster isn't very impressive as a whole. They should have got a lot more than what they did for Afflalo.

That isn't a lineup taking you to the playoffs, no matter how big of a Magic homer you are. I think the Pistons roster is more talented with a much better coach (remember a guy named Van Gundy?) and still don't think the Pistons will be better than Miami.
