Unless there's one or more trades before the start of the draft,  this will probably be my final Mock Draft for 2014.   I'm basing it on what I think each team will do,   not necessarily what I would do.    Each selection is based on a combination of what I believe the player's value is,  team needs,  and how well I think the player fits with what the team is trying to accomplish.

I would be very happy with Anthony Barr as the Lions pick at # 10,  based on realistic scenarios.    However,  if the team brass rates Justin Gilbert at the same level or greater,   I want Gilbert.    The need at CB is very high and I don't like most of the CB options after Round 1.     Trading down might be the best option but so much depends on the offers.

  I'm sure it would be difficult seeing Teddy in Tennessee.   Yet, when considering that the Tennessee team brass isn't sold on the QB's on their current roster and the overall package Teddy Bridgewater brings to the table,    I think there's a very realistic chance they would draft him.  Especially if Blake Bortles has been taken already.

 

  If Anthony Barr is on the board with pick # 11,   that could easily change the dynamics for Tennessee.    Barr would appear to be a great fit for Ray Horton's Defense.

 Good point about the rumors.   I try my best not to factor in the pre-draft rumors,  as so much of it is smoke.   

 

 While Johnny Manziel could go as high as # 2 in this draft,    each time I made a projection for teams that need a QB,   I was more comfortable projecting a different player.   Until the time came when Jerry Jones was on the clock.     Manziel is the type of player that Jones has difficulty resisting.    With Tony Romo's back a significant issue and Romo not getting any younger,    at the very least Jones will seriously consider drafting Manziel if available.

I'm far from certain Jimmy Garoppolo is the answer.   Yet,  at the very least,   I think Garoppolo is someone who projects as a QB who can help hold the fort if the starter is out.    While a case can be made that the Jaguars can get better value in Round 3 than taking a QB who might not be the answer as a starter,   the premium on QB's is so great that I think Dave Caldwell would at least be very tempted to take him in that spot.     Knowing that Garoppolo should provide good low cost value for at least 4 seasons.   

 

Aaron Murray would have made my 4th Round.   If the Jaguars or another team took Murray instead of Garoppolo or AJ. McCarron,   it wouldn't surprise me in the least.    All 3 QB's have very good intangibles.   Each probably will go somewhere in Rounds 2, 3, and 4.    My # 1 concern with Murray is his size.    The fact that Murray is coming off a major injury reinforces my concern that he will be able to hold up physically on the NFL level.

If you decide to run the contest,   I'll gladly enter my first 50 players in this Mock Draft.

 

When getting to the Jaguars 2nd Round pick,  once I took Derek Carr off the board for the Raiders earlier in Round 2,   I wasn't comfortable projecting any of the remaining QB's to the Jaguars.   With the Jaguars having a major need at WR and with the value at WR available with pick # 39,   it became a question of which WR would be the most likely choice.     

 

In Round 3,  there wasn't a player at pick # 76 that jumped out that I was comfortable taking over the QB prospect that seemed to be the most likely choice by Dave Caldwell, if he drafted a QB in that spot.    In the end,   it basically became a 55-45 % choice of Jimmy Garoppolo over A.J. McCarron.  Hence,  it wouldn't surprise me if the Jaguars took McCarron.     I believe a solid case can be made for either of them in that spot.

By all means,  if you get a chance I would be interested in your input on some of the other picks that you are puzzled by.    I always enjoy your football opinions,  as they are well thought out and deep in analysis.

 

Regarding the Vikings DT situation,  while a case can be made that Aaron Donald would give them much more depth and quality at DT,   they used a 1st Round pick on Sharrif Floyd in 2013.    In addition,  they made a major investment in Giants UFA Lival Joseph back in March.    I'm anticipating the Vikings will draft a DT to be added to their rotation.     But with the pick # 8 resource,  it seems like they would get more efficiency by going in another direction.

 

 

The QB need in Minnesota is tremendous.   There's no question about that.    Yet,  once Blake Bortles was off my draft board,   I came to the conclusion that there's more value with Justin Gilbert with pick # 8 than would be the case with the remaining QB's.    Especially when factoring in that G.M. Rick Spielman can't afford another mistake at QB in the upper half of Round 1.    The Christian Ponder decision already proved costly for Leslie Frazier.   My guess is Spielman decides not to take a chance on Teddy Bridgewater at # 8.    I don't think the Vikings will be drafting Johnny Manziel.   He doesn't seem like Mike Zimmer's type of player,  especially with such a high draft resource.   

 

While the Vikings added Xavier Rhodes in last year's 1st Round,   I still feel they need another CB that's a noticeable upgrade on what's on their current roster.   Captain Munnerlyn seems like a good UFA acquisition but his best position is probably Nickel CB.   Josh Robinson hasn't been consistent enough on the outside or in the Nickel CB position.    In a division with some of the most gifted and productive WR's in the NFL,  the Vikings are currently vulnerable at CB.    They certainly can't match up well against the Bears pair of starting WR's    Hence,  Justin Gilbert would provide them with a CB that has tremendous physical tools and ball skills.

TMD,  before I forget,  when asking your question earlier in the thread,   I should have used the assumption that Justin Gilbert wouldn't be available with pick # 10.   If the first 9 picks go the way I projected and the Lions don't trade down,   I would indeed want Anthony Barr as the Lions pick # 10.     Barr would fill the need of a ' flamethrowing LB'  that Jim Caldwell and co.  are seeking.   With a tremendous upside.   Considering Barr has such little experience on the edge on Defense,  it's impressive to say the least how productive he was in his two seasons at the position.
