Am I the only one who thinks this is the stupidest idea ever?

I think it is smart if it means a higher payout and a better game. The game has been getting lower and lower on the totem pole.

Looks like part of it is moving to a night game, which will give it bigger exposure.

And it's SEC v. Big Ten or ACC (including Notre Dame)

A change was needed. The last few years have been major duds. I'd say they were lucky if they had 40k at this past year's game.

They're moving the game to 1/2, and it will be televised in prime time.  That's a good thing for the former Gator Bowl for both ratings and ticket sales.  Having a bigger payout will also benefit it greatly.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Similar to what we saw with the Peach Bowl.  It became the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and then the Peach part was cut off and was then known as just the Chick-fil-a Bowl.  However I thought I read as part of their agreement in being one of the six in the playoff rotation they had to bring back the Peach name.  As far as the Gator Bowl, I'll never call it anything different.

Gator Bowl has lost a little bit of its chache...its allure... its twinkle.  It used to hold that coveted New Year day spot but playing in a bowl game past New Years doesnt mean anything anymore.  That used to be a huge deal for a school.  No more.  Bringing back the SEC was a step up but the problem is it pulls in the 6th or 7th best SEC team.  So you either get a smaller named team like Miss St that doesnt captivate national audiences or you get a major team like Georgia or Florida who is having a down year.  which again doesnt captivate audiences.

I still think the Gator Bowl is in a tough spot.  However many SEC teams will be in the playoff.  Odds are one will be sent to the Sugar or the Orange.  Then theyll send another to the Citrus.  And then the Gator Bowl will be lumped in with 5 others which the SEC itself will determine which remaining teams are going where.  So it may not be the most deserving or the closest, it will be at the whim of the SEC.  So who knows what team they'll get going forward.  The Gator Bowl has developed somewhat of a bad reputation amongst other bowl committees as I understand it(too much old boys club) and as a result, has been left at the alter.  No reason this couldnt be one of the more prestigious bowls.  But its now on par with the likes of the Belk Bowl and the Houston Bowl and the Music City Bowl.

Trying to get its own primetime slot after New Years is a feeble attempt to differentiate itself.  But the damage is done.

No surprise and long overdue. My guess is Catlett was holding out on changing the name and Alan Verlander pushed him into the 21st century.

how does this work if they got rid of the bowl games and moved to a playoff system?  Is the brackets just going to be assigned to a "bowl" game?

I don't doubt the economic benefits, but it just sounds so stupid.
