Fiesta Bowl thread: Okay Bortles...impress me.

Quote:I for one do think it's justifiable to call Bortles a very possible, even likely 'Gabbert 2.0', and no I don't call every QB I don't like that. For example, I may have my reservations with Teddy, but I would never say he's a Gabbert-clone. So why Bortles then?

Because he's been given an extra push up the draft board because of his supposed NFL-standard size/build/strength/etc(just like Gabbert did undeservedly so). For looking back now in hindsight, and judging Gabbert solely on what he did on the field at Missouri, it's clear that he was NOT a top-10 pick/franchise guy. But his supposed 'perfect size' pushed him higher than he should have been. And if we're honest with ourselves, Bortles is benefiting from the same thing.

In other words, if you had never actually 'seen' the QBs, and were blindly told the statistics of Manziel and Bortles, and the teams they played against, no one in their right mind would ever choose Bortles. But like Gabbert, he's pushing up the draft board because of his supposed 'NFL size'.

And so no, it's not that he plays like Gabbert, or is destined to fail like Gabbert did. Only that he's getting the same push that Gabbert did, more for his size than his actual play. Buyers beware.

He is getting a push because he's good and his play reflects that. The size is just an added bonus.

Bortles in the second round?  Where you live does money and candy just fall from the sky too?

Per Rotoworld via ESPN:

Quote:Scouts Inc.'s ranks Louisville junior QB Teddy Bridgewater as the No. 9 overall player in the class.

UCF redshirt junior QB Blake Bortles checks in at No. 15 overall and Johnny Manziel follows these two at No. 22. There is a big drop off before getting to LSU's Zach Mettenberger (45), Brett Hundley (51), A.J. McCarron (54) and Derek Carr (57). The group, made up of Todd McShay, Kevin Weidl, and Steve Muench, might be the highest on Bortles' pro projection at this point in the process.

Yeah, this is definitely a QB-driven league, and many QB's are slightly overdrafted just for the sake of having "their guy."

I think Bortles does end up coming out, and if he does, he will be a top 10 pick.  My ideal scenario would be trading back with ATL for their first, and maybe an additional second or third -- or even more -- so they can take Clowney, and we take Bortles at six.

Look, I'm sick of the over-criticism some of these QB's get.  Sure, some deserve to be criticized, but no QB is perfect, not even Teddy.  We have lacked a franchise QB for -- well -- we've never really had one.  I'd be willing to swing for the fences on Bortles.  I think he's capable of being a Reothlisberger type player in that he's a big guy who moves well, may make some boneheaded mistakes from time to time, but at the same time he's a guy you can ride in the 4th QTR.  You want the ball in this guy's hand when it matters the most; he's proven this time and time again at the collegiate level.  I'd be down to draft this guy.

What's wrong with that?  Looks like he was just having some fun on NYE.

Quote:Khalil Mack looks way more fluid.  Not that I'd draft him ahead of Clowney, but he's right there behind him.  Clowney still dominates the heck out of the competition.

I agree.

The funny thing is that Drake is supposedly 6'0" and Manziel looks an inch or two shorter.

Quote:Bortles lacks the touch and accuracy of Bridgewater right now but I'm starting to like him more and more.  I went to the Texans site and was reading concerns about Bridgewater's extremely small hands.

Guess they haven't seen that deadspin picture of Teddy?  :teehee:

Draft Bortles and sit him behind Mike Vick for a year or two. We have a better line for Vick to stay healthy and if he doesn't you put in the rookie.

That's what I was thinking. Gabbert + Courage = above average QB.

Quote:I'd be alright if we ended up with Bortles.  I dont know that I like him at 3 overall.  But I dont really like any of these QBs at 3 overall.  They all have big question marks to me.  But its a QB league.  Thats all the matters.  So you get them where you can.

I do think Bortles can be a good NFL QB.  I've said before but I think as far as a college scouting report, he is a bigger version of Dalton with a slightly better arm.  And I think he handles pressure a little better than Dalton.  Although I thought Dalton was fine with that in college.  Again Bortles doesnt do anything great but he seems to do everything well and almost always make the smart play.  He is effective throwing down the field(moreso than Teddy as the stats indicate) and the guy is a winner.  He leads his team on clutch drives when they need a score.

Last night wasnt a great game for him but you look up and he has 300 yards a bunch of TDs and actually ran effectively.  He wasnt asked to throw down the field much but then again he didnt have to.  We all remember when Tom Brady was like 26-28 in the playoff game against us 6 or so years ago.  He only threw one pass more than 5 yards down the field all game.  But it worked.  Last night Baylor's CBs were basically holding on to UCF's WR in tight coverage all game long.  Spread them out horizontally and Baylor couldnt stop it.  He had two picks but I thought both were great plays by the defense.

Ideally you could get a guy like Bortles early in the 2nd but Im not sure that is possible.  Ideally we wouldnt have to trade half our draft to move up for Teddy but Im not sure thats possible.  We'll probably have give up more than we want for whatever QB we draft unless we luck out.
I'm on my way driving from MN back to MD and i was listening to espn radio on XM and they were talking about the playoff coming up on saturday and sunday and they were talking about Rivers vs Dalton and one of the things they talked about was how Dalton doesn't handle pressure well and statistically he's one of the worst Qbs under pressure, but his O line is great and he usually isn't under pressure which is why he's been doing well these past few years. So to compare him to Dalton I think is an insult.

And as for that first pick, I think if he throws that ball to an NFL receiver it gets either caught or batted down by the receiver. Watching that throw it looked like his WR didn't even try and get it.
