Worst Teams Tracker

Quote:I think you meant D' Anthony Smith,  the DT that was traded to the Seahawks this summer.

No, I mean safety Anthony Smith going to Green Bay. We did not get a pick from the Packers.

No pick coming from the Seahawks also was bad because they cut him.

Why do teams agree to conditional draft picks knowing that can result in not getting a pick?

Who to root for in Week 14 games that affect our draft status:

Colts @ Bengals

Chiefs @ Redskins

Raiders @ Jets

Vikings @ Ravens

Falcons @ Packers

Bills @ Buccaneers

Giants @ Chargers

It does not matter who wins the other games from a Jaguars fan's perspective.

I stand corrected.   I forgot that Anthony Smith was with the Jaguars.   He's a former Safety I associated with the Steelers mostly but to some extent the Packers.  Smith's career went downhill in a hurry.

The reason why a team would make a trade along these lines is the demand for the player's service is very limited.   Being that the player is going to be cut anyway,  it usually would make more sense to try to at least get a conditional pick than get nothing at all.   While the conditional pick often results in nothing at all when the dust settles,  at least there's a chance a late round pick might end up coming back the team's way that traded the player.

True, but who ever thinks about that when we hear a traded player was cut by the other team and all we care about is getting that pick?

Anthony Smith was a Jaguar the same year we had Don Carey and wore #20.

Something else we need to consider is the second round draft order. In addition to Washington having a pick, all teams with the same record will have different pick numbers. We can get the top pick, but not #33. Anyone who is thinking about players to pick in the second round would be smart to keep this in mind.

After winning four of the last five games, we have to start talking about simply clinching a top five pick instead of a specific pick number. During the TNF game one of the commentators said if the NFL draft was today, we would be third behind the Texans and Rams. Less than two hours later, we got our fourth win, which would put us behind all teams with three wins and the Vikings if they never win again this season. Now the important thing to remember here is nobody else has played in Week 14 yet, so we have to wait until Sunday night to figure out where we currently stand in the draft order.

This is why it matters what other teams do: The Vikings are 3-8-1 and the Redskins, Falcons, and Buccaneers are 3-9. Now I can't root for the Falcons this week because they play at Green Bay but I will definitely root for them after that. On my to-do list Sunday is watch the Bills at Buccaneers game (1:00 ET on CBS). What we are hoping for now is simply to get as high a pick as possible because I expect the last three games to be win win loss for a 6-10 record.
