Insane people that should be old enough where they would be a product of the environment in the 50s, 60s, and 70s more so than the last twenty to twenty-five years of "terrible societal influences", no less. TMD just can't admit that he is wrong, even though there have been mountains of evidence that says that human society has been messed up for the entirety of its existence.

 

I say that we should just be happy that we aren't pitting people against each other in death matches for fun like the Romans did, or sacrificing humans by cutting their hearts out like various Native American civilizations, or partaking in wars that last 100+ years like the French and the English. Is our society perfect? No, of course not, but we've certainly come a long way from the days where real hangings were family entertainment.

I've tried over the course of roughly 15 or so of these threads when they pop up. It's pointless though to try and convince him. He's clueless,and chooses to stay that way. Facts do not matter.

This was a tragic event perpetrated by an unstable individual. Not the product of learned behavior or societal influence. It's sad, but these things happen.

Cognitive Dissonance - This is why people get so upset when you challenge what they believe or hold as truth.

 

I am sure those in doubt would have heard of Leon Festinger. After all, he was a leading psychologist in the early 1900's. Anyone who took a high school or college psychology class has surely heard of him right?

 

Anyway, it's the mental conflict that occurs when beliefs or assumptions are challenged by new information. No matter what, they will rationalize what they know to be the true and only fact, and no other new facts or info can change that belief. They will try to preserve their current understanding of the world by either rejecting, explaining away, or avoiding any new info.

 

My memory was jogged by this when I was talking with a hs psych teacher I work with about a specific thing occuring. I did a little more digging about this and found the above.
