I guess you had never heard of Steve Beuerlein, our top pick in the expansion draft. Mark Brunell arrived by trade after we drafted Beuerlein, then spent the first few games on the bench.

 

You also are wrong statistically. Brunell threw only 20 touchdown passes in 1999. David Garrd broke that team record in 2007. So he was not our only good quarterback for sure.

 

I'm with TMD I like Brunnell my favorite QB to date but at this point we have 4 people from an era that produced no Super Bowls and only 2 3 playoff berths

 

Where do you get 2-3 playoff berths from? Learn how to count.1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 - four seasons. Did we not go to the playoffs all four years?

 

I never once recall any team switching their pass rush around because Brunell is left handed. Boselli handled the very best pass rushers of that era every single snap that he played, and HANDLED is the right word for what he did to them.

 

Why does it matter? Did you see that player reversal during 49ers games when Steve Young was there or Falcons games when they had Michael Vick? If not, you have no argument. Even with Boselli, Brunell was sacked more than any other quarterback at least one season. Obviously being left-handed did not make a difference to defenses.

 

I agree with that...the Eagles are flat out [BLEEP] the liberal way that they retire numbers...I'm surprised they can even field a 53 man roster with the scarcity of available numbers left...

 

However, the Jags are a bit ridiculous too - with the way they STILL keep 8, 71, 82 out of "rotation". All 3 of those numbers should be in use by now. Hell..., Michael Irvin was arguably a better player at his position than all 3 of those were at their positions, and won THREE SB's, and yet Dallas still has #88 in the rotation, which Dez Bryant uses currently....

 

Who did the Eagles retire numbers for? Are you just complaining or were they really not great players?

 

Yes but Dez got special permission form Irvin to wear it. At least thats what michael irvin will tell you.

 

Dez Bryant should have not asked for permission to use it. If you want to be part of a team, you need to honor that team's tradition and history, not request permission to be a retired number. I am glad the Broncos let Peyton Manning wear #18, however, because nobody seems to know a guy named Frank Tripeka anymore.

So, you don't have a problem with Duper being in the Dolphins RoH? Well, then surely you wouldn't object to McCardell being in the Pride.

 

In six seasons in Jacksonville McCardell recorded 499 receptions for 6,393 yards and 30 touchdowns.

In eleven seasons in Miami Duper recorded 511 receptions for 8,869 yards and 59 touchdowns.

 

That means that in five extra seasons Duper managed a whole 12 extra receptions, 2,476 yards, and 29 touchdowns.

If we use McCardell's six seasons as a baseline (and say he only halved his usual production for those five extra seasons)  he would have 704 receptions, 9053 yards, and 43 touchdowns.

If we use McCardell's six seasons as a baseline and don't halve his production he ends up with 914 receptions, 11718 yards, and 55 touchdowns.

 

Oh, and in 11 seasons with the Jags, Smith outperformed Duper in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. Yet you're "on the fence" about him, but are fine with calling Duper/Clayton one of the greatest duos and having them in the RoH of the Dolphins.

 

Smith and McCardell outperformed Duper and Clayton without having one of the best QBs of all time throwing them the ball.

 

...and I've been on record with saying Jimmy deserves to be in. Certainly more so than Brunell. 

 

Actually, you said that you'd be on the fence about his inclusion into the pride.

 

Jimmy Smith would be more deserving than Brunell.....and I'd still be on the fence regarding Jimmy's inclusion into the Pride. 

 

Why? Because of his off the field issues? Well, if you're going to count that against Smith wouldn't it only make sense to count Brunell's positive off the field impacts for him?

It's about what a player did while playing for the Jags and has nothing to do if he was/is considered "elite" by NFL standards or your/my expectations...

When Mark played here he was one of the better players to wear their uniform to date... he's been the best QB up until this point in time... I'm sure, years from now, there will be a better QB to play for the Jags... it doesn't bother me he's in the Pride and it wouldn't bother me if he wasn't... what bothers me is some posters act like it's "their" Pride he's entering and not the Jaguars Pride...

The reason people have an issue with this is other teams only put the names of elite players on their rings of fame, so they think POTJ should be reserved for the best guys to ever wear teal and black. I totally understand this after seeing some names at Lambeau Field, Cowboys Stadium, and Sports Authority Field.
