Josh Rosen
|
Adam Schefter is reporting that Josh Rosen has yet to declare for the draft, because he does not want to go to Cleveland. He really wants to go to the Giants. He really shouldn't stay in school though, because he is not a good fit for the new Chip Kelly offense, that will be implemented. Normally, that would put a rookie QB between a rock and a hard place, but ever since Eli Manning pulled a power move when he was drafted, essentially forcing the San Diego Chargers to trade with the Giants, so he didn't have to play for the Chargers, I can see the same type of scenario playing out in this draft. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the Giants trade up from #2 to #1 overall in exchange for a 2nd round pick, be it in this draft or in 2019. In fact, I expect it. Rosen is a pretty serious person and I don't see him backing down, yet I see no scenario where he stays at UCLA. He's just not mobile or durable enough to play QB for Kelly. I believe the Giants and Browns will swap spots allowing Rosen to go #1 to the Giants and the Browns will probably select QB Josh Allen of Wyoming at #2 overall.

Rosen would be crazy to stay in college. What if he gets injured or just has a bad year?

Seems like the most likely scenario.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."
I mean, Cleveland isn't smart enough to draft him anyway
IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS

It's a way to make Cleveland know that he doesn't want to play for them and that they should be prepared to trade the pick. Besides, if he entered the draft and they did select him, he could just not sign the contract, sit out next year and re-enter the 2019 draft. That way he could avoid injury by not playing in 2018. Right now, he kinda has all the power. (12-24-2017, 04:37 PM)TheO-LineMatters Wrote:(12-24-2017, 02:46 PM)jaglou53 Wrote: Rosen would be crazy to stay in college. Go be the reason Cleveland is good again. Avoiding a bad team tells me you're not confident in your abilities to be great despite adversity.
Not only is it not smart what he's saying, but isn't he being a bit of a presumptive [BLEEP] assuming he's a lock to be #1 overall pick?

I certainly understand his reluctance to play for Cleveland. However, as bad as they have been, he would not be completely devoid of help should he go to Cleveland. Assuming Joe Thomas returned to play another season and were healthy, the Browns would have the making of a good offensive line to block for him. He'd have a good young TE in Njoku to catch his passes, and some decent WRs too. The Browns also have the makings of a good defense. Right now they currently rank 12th in total defense and 7th against the run-pretty remarkable considering they trail in all of their games and teams habitually look to run out the clock against them. The short term problem is they are -28 in turnovers. Longer term, the organizational instability that I often caution against hits them hard and naturally would scare a prospect away. Hue Jackson is finishing his second year, finishing 1-31 these last two seasons. It is difficult to imagine that he would get a third year after that record. If he stays a 3rd season, I can't imagine him being in anything other than lame duck status the whole year, and it would be difficult for a rookie QB to come in and turn things around to the point Jackson saves his job. If he is fired after this year, it is doubtful anyone is retained from his coaching staff, which likely means an entirely new scheme, which means new personnel requirements to fit that scheme. Whatever strengths the offense would seem to have for Rosen or any QB coming in might be mitigated by the need to re-stock the personnel. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Right now, he kinda has all the power. Elway didn't want to play for the Colts when he was drafted. Does that mean he wasn't confident in his abilities? I think not, especially since he threatened to play baseball. Bo Jackson did not want to play for the Bucs the year he was slated to be drafted for various reasons. I'm pretty sure he was confident in his abilities, considering he did go play baseball and later said pro football would be his "hobby," when he did eventually go to the Raiders. Largely under the advice of his father, Eli Manning did not want to play for the Bolts when he was drafted. I don't think a reluctance to play for the Browns would necessarily be reflective of self doubt about his abilities. I do think a reluctance to play for the Browns is indicative of an aversion to the systemic organizational dysfunction that allows the Browns to perpetually lose the way they have been. Furthermore, if my understanding of his quote is accurate, he did not specifically mention the Browns. Unless he was asked a question specifically about the Browns, he spoke in general terms. As a general rule, a player's best chance to succeed only comes in the right situation. Consider that teams make statements about the suitability of players for their teams all the time and draft accordingly. Players are people too. I'm pretty certain players have opinions about the suitability of teams for them all of the time. However, because of the draft, they typically don't have much control over where they go. It doesn't mean their opinions go away. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

If he goes to New York, yes, he'd have great WR's, but the O-Line is trash and they have no running game to speak of. Not to mention that all that money they spent on the defensive side of the football has not panned out either. Comparing the two teams strictly from a talent evaluation standpoint, Cleveland has more upside. However, Cleveland likely has two top five picks with which to bolster the talent on this team. Assuming they took Rosen (or any other QB) # 1 overall, if they wanted to upgrade RB, they could easily take Saquon Barkley with their other first round pick, or, if they wanted to bolster RT with an eye towards eventually replacing Joe Thomas, they could take Orlando Brown's kid from Oklahoma. That would make the talent disparity between the two teams even more pronounced. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
First of all, assuming Cleveland would pick him, Cleveland has enormous resources for improvement, including 12 draft picks in the upcoming draft, two in the top five, five in the first two rounds (three second round picks), and huge cap space. Plus a new GM to utilize all those resources. And from watching them play a few games this year, even though they're 0-15, they're not that bad.

They had some really close losses and with a competent QB, they would've been a middle of the pack type of team. If they would've drafted Wentz a couple of years ago, they might've even been a wildcard team.
I think that we will see a resurgence in Cleveland soon. John Dorsey is going to be better at finding talent in my opinion and I'm of the opinion that Hue Jackson has potential to be a very good HC.
They aren't devoid of talent and with a real GM now I would not be surprised to see Cleveland make a big turnaround next season. |
