Jaguars select Orlando Brown in Round Two of Site Mock
|
If we're drafting a RG, I'd hope we don't select one earlier than the third round.

I'm fine with one in the first, but this is definitely a draft where we don't have to reach on a guard to get a quality one. If we took one in the 3rd, we can probably still provide an upgrade from Cann. (04-04-2018, 09:11 AM)pirkster Wrote: If we're drafting a RG, I'd hope we don't select one earlier than the third round. I'm fine with taking one sooner when we are a team that runs the ball more than thirty times a game and struggled with interior run blocking. Especially if it's a guy that may become the right tackle in 2019/2020. Brown may not be my first choice of "tackles that may play guard for a minute" but I don't think it's bad value late in the second. Linder was a third rounder, so you can expect Pro Bowl caliber to be there without taking one early. That being said, if the value is there I wouldn't mind a center if they feel the guy was plug and play, and was of that caliber. That solves RG with Linder. A starting caliber RT would be great, too. Unless it's a C, I just don't know if there's value in getting an interior guy so early. He'd have to grade really high and project as a high caliber NFL talent.

This draft though is pretty deep, I just wouldn't expect a pro bowl caliber G to be there. Billy Price is a guy I like if we went with one in the first. He can play G or C, so they can move Linder or keep him there and just have Price shift over if Linder got hurt. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! You guys are starting to sell me on it now that our roster is more complete than in the past. I'm more intrigued by a guy like Jamil Demby. He's got the size for RT or RG, but the skillset of a LT. Needs polish for sure, but could be RG or swing tackle, or maybe take over at RT at some point. Downside is that coming from LT, he may project at LG (and we just solved that spot.) He'd need to show versatility and that he can handle run blocking at the next level.

I was listening to Orlando Brown's college head coach talk about him, and he was gushing over Brown. He was saying that while he may not be the most athletic guy as his combine numbers suggest, he considers Brown to be an elite player on the field. He talked about how he's physically able to handle just about anybody, and how especially in the run game he's an absolute brawler. He may be the best run blocker in the draft.
Now I know the 14 reps doesn't make a lot of sense, but he's football strong. His head coach even compared him to a guy who was a workout warrior and could bench just about anything, but when you put him out of the field his game doesn't translate. He's saying Brown is the opposite where even though he didn't test well, when you put him on the field he's going to man handle defenders. That said, he did keep going back to his ability to tackle which may suggest he might not make the switch to G all that easily. He projects to be an immediate starter at RT in the NFL.

I totally agree that getting a solid/good starting guard in the third round of the NFL draft is typically early enough. I'm just factoring in the impact it may have on the run game right away and the versatility points of a guy that might back-up or challenge to start at RT eventually. Makes me feel fine going earlier.

It's one of if not the weakest position on the team My dream would be to draft Ragnow and move Linder back to RG (04-04-2018, 09:46 AM)pirkster Wrote:(04-04-2018, 09:17 AM)Markulous Wrote: I'm fine with one in the first, but this is definitely a draft where we don't have to reach on a guard to get a quality one. Just because Linder is a Pro Bowl caliber G that we got in the 3rd, saying we shouldnt draft another before the 3rd just because we got Linder there is a poor argument and not a good way to think. Combine just reflected his poor work ethic and poor athleticism. He just lumbered around on the field and tried to out-muscle people, which isn't going to work in the NFL with no technique and no speed. I wouldn't put much stock in what a college coach says about their prospect, they are of course going to hype him up.

His overall size was the dominating factor in college. I am sure if you have played football before there is always that teammate that is much larger than everyone else, slow as molasses, and unathletic as hell... but when he gets his hands on you it's over. That is Brown in college. He has a chance to be good in the NFL no doubt, but seeing him show up with man [BLEEP] and basically didn't care at all is disappointing. No need for lazy players on this team.
Pass on Brown unless he falls to the middle rounds. He needs lots of time on the bench - the weight bench. It wouldn't hurt to get him on a nutrition plan as well for a year. He's going to struggle in Florida heat at 360 pounds.

Perhaps because I didn't bother to explain it. I feel there's better value in the first and second other than interior (I'm a BAP guy, which means I expect better players at other positions to be there for us in the first couple rounds and don't expect the BAP to be an interior lineman.) In rounds three and beyond, you're going to find quality starters (even Pro Bowlers.) If you'd poll the starters across the league, you'll find as many outside the first two rounds as you do players taken in rounds 1 and 2 on the interior. It's like many safeties, fullbacks, etc.... it's just where the starting caliber value for the position is. Could there be some graded in the first and second? Sure. What's the tradeoff? Are you giving up a more premium position player of equal or higher grade? There's a lot to consider. Will I be upset if we take one first or second round? No. Not if that's where he's graded and turns out to be a special player. That's the only reason I would consider it. He'd have to be special to warrant selection over a more premium position of equal talent. I think we've got a chance to upgrade our roster this season. I think we can, but if we take interior in the first or second, we could be giving up the chance of getting a backup QB, RT, or LB. Pickings at those positions will be much thinner and the crop much weaker beyond the second round than interior will.
