I think too much is being made of this. Defense in general is a lower priority right now from the perspective of getting the most out of Trevor. There will definitely be some acquisitions in the draft and in FA, and Neilsen will have some ability to come in and help Baalke or whomever rank the players that might be available in terms of how bad we want them, but Neilsen is a pro and he understands that he's got to get the most out of the players we have, at least for the first season. He's not going to pound the table with "Campbell is not my guy!" when he's never seen Campbell in practice or tried to teach him. He will work with what he has, try to teach, watch practice, and he may end up running more zone than he did last year.

Whilst I agree Campbell has struggled massively in man. It would be interesting to see how he’d do if he matched up against a wr2 as opposed to the number one guys, if they do cut Williams and sign a cb1 it be interesting to see how he’d look then

Puts this team in a bad spot really. Hopefully he can recover and stay healthier in 2024. I can see why quite a few mock drafts have us looking at a CB with the 17th overall selection. 

The injuries he had and with him trying to play through them though go back to some of my earlier comments last year down the stretch. It felt like he was rushed back out there at times, just like Lawrence was as well as DaVon Hamilton and because their play suffered for it, so did the team in general.

That's a 50/50 thing for me but I put it on the strength and conditioning team, the medical staff and the coaching staff. I admire grit and toughness when it comes to athletes, however, when that grit and toughness results in falling down in the win and loss column? Somebody has to take charge and shut them down. 

The difference between this team winning the division in a one game race could have really been circled back on failing to give some of these guys adequate rest.

It is early in the process and free agency doesn't start for 7 weeks or so, but thought we could speculate a bit on whether or not Nielsen needs different personnel to run his intended scheme in Jax. Specifically in the secondary.

(I think we know he's gonna want some beef on the IDL and some edge depth/rotation as most any DC would - and we have linebackers available to compete in camp for base 4-3 spots) 

That said - current roster:

Campbell:  Really good zone cover guy who has shown some struggles in man. He may still be coachable there yet to some degree, but if there is one guy in the secondary I'm worried about playing 50% of his snaps in press man - it is Campbell. Change may be desired. Or they may try to develop him into the role. 

Williams:  Sort of the same dynamic as Campbell but to a lesser degree. Williams' tape in man coverage is better to me than Campbell's. I think if they are changing things this offseason - they may not make him a priority to move away from just yet - if at all. 

Nickel: We've needed an upgrade here forever and I imagine fresh blood will compete with the recent late rounders to see who rises. 

SS: Another great opportunity to upgrade a position IMO. The better OCs will get this defender isolated from time to time vs a TE or speedy RB and it can get ugly. Both in coverage and open field tackling. Honestly - I don't know what Nielsen wants trait wise here, and I won't speculate, but he will need to be able to man up in coverage. 

FS: I think Cisco has enough upside to be a frontrunner here and chances are good Nielsen and a new DB coach can get him dialed in to the new scheme. I'd be surprised if any capital were spent on a prospect to compete meaningfully for the start there. 

Bottom line:

I think we are likely to see at least two DBs added using some valuable capital via FA and/or draft. 

I don't think this means Campbell is automatically out - it could go a number of ways - but I think he may be the least adaptable to the scheme out of the three assumed starters for next year.

Updating this: 

They replaced Williams more affordably with a better man coverage guy.

A+ on paper

So - the question now becomes - What do they see in the remaining secondary already on the roster and how will they seek to alter it - or will they simply coach up what they have in place?

Pretty good insights there. I am a believer on defense you really need to be 2 deep if possible. Over a season you are going to need them all. They kept 6CB + 4 safeties last year, so 10 guys. I am lumping them together a little as we seem to be moving towards position-less football in the secondary. Between Savage (4.38 - 40) and Johnson (5.52 - 40) they could possibly play big safety in the slot. I believe Savage has done just that in his career. That said I see them getting a man cover CB that can play slot in the first 5 picks and maybe 1 more at the end to develop. We have been developing a couple from previous drafts. Guess it depends on how they view them.

I think Campbell Starting is a lock as long as he is here. He had a stellar 2022, playing at almost Elite level, that is why this last year was painfull to watch. So unless he is traded, I see him starting for us next season.

As for the nickel, I see us drafting a versatile guy in the first round ( Cooper Dejean, from Iowa) and playing him and Johnson 50/50 during the season.

Campbell has to be a starter at CB. He was injured for the majority of this past season. He was great the season before that. You can't replace him now without giving him every chance to fail. I don't see him failing though, he's good.

Johnson needs more playing time. I don't know how they're going to work that out, but I'd like to see him on the field more.

Darby is a safe security blanket, but CB at 17 would still be fitting.

Like I said in another thread, Sav is a high quality individual and decent player.

He is no longer in Green Bay because of missed tackles. Missed tackles have been a consistent issue throughout Sav's career. Savage had a missed-tackle percentage of 13.6 in 2023. That number has reached double digits 4 times in his 5 years in Green Bay.
