Preseason Kick-Off

#1

Well, finally. Football is back. Time to see what Caleb Williams offers and what our divisional rival and AFC South reigning Champions have up their sleeves. Don't expect too much out of the first team offenses and defenses tonight, however, I keep forgetting that preseason is just three weeks now. Repetitions could be higher than I think tonight.

Not a fan of the tinhorns away uniforms. Looks too much like what Atlanta wears.

[BLEEP]. Didn't realize they drafted Cade Stover at TE for Stroud. Twin TE sets are going to be interesting this year for them. Stover is underrated.

Collin Johnson looking good tonight. Guy we drafted back in 2020. Good for him.

Sure did.  My initial thoughts were uh oh, but then again, he's playing against backups and was released by 2 other teams so I trust the best he will ever be is the 5th or 6th WR on any team.  Good for him though, making the best of his shot as I thought he would have been more successful at this stage of his career, based on his accomplishments as a Texas Longhorn.

Sidenote: I love the new kickoff rule, bringing returns back into the mix.

I recall back in 2020 actually timing the commercials from the point of a TD to the kickoff (which was not return) then to the point in which the 1st snap took place and 9 minutes elapsed from the point of the TD until the next snap. They reduced the time in between since then but the prior kickoffs (that went into the endzone) were just a simple break between extensive commercials on each side.

I've heard talk that teams may still bite the bullet and take the touchbacks. If you start seeing guys running it back to the 28 or 30 consistently, teams are probably going to choose the most risk-averse option.

Enjoy it while you can.

In my opinion the NFL is ruining the sport much like NASCAR killed that sport.  I understand the whole "trying to be safer" thing, but these players are paid large amounts of money and know the risk(s) when they step onto a field.

Yes. 1,000% agreed on this with you. These guys get paid a lot more and get pampered a lot more than the old heads and older generations did. I know it sounds morbid, but, injuries are apart of the game. While it's no fun when it happens to your team or favorite player? There's been some INCREDIBLE stories birthed out of another player's pain or misfortune.

Kurt Warner stepping in from out of the shadows to replace Trent Green.
Tom Brady stepping in immediately for Drew Bledsoe and becoming the greatest of all time.

Hell, we even our little fun with Minshew here after Foles broke his collarbone in the opening contest. These things happen. It should be embraced and accepted. I would like to see the game go back to more of what I saw growing up in the 90's and 2000's.

I miss the running game. I miss the grind. I miss the grit. I miss seeing players get absolutely popped, within reason. Now, it's just, a different game. A little too different.

I like the new kickoff rule. I think breaking the big one is exciting. I would like to see some of the big hits back. They need to roll back some of the QB protection, too.

I disagree.  The new rule makes it seem almost like a punt rather than a kickoff.

I have a feeling the most exciting returns of the season will come in the PS.

Once the coordinators figure out a way to get splashy returns, all the teams need to do is kick it into the stands like they always did.
