Defensive Identity?

#61

The defensive identity is whatever nostalgia Area Code or Call to the past they can throw up on a social media post, Stadium Score Board or web banner to distract from roster disaster and failed leadership.

Glory days is one of the most depressing songs like all the awful Springsteen songs. This franchise fails as it keeps resurrecting the past and chugging along in the mire.
Birth of the Franchise - November 30, 1993
Death of the Franchise - November 29, 2011

Fans deserve better. Thanks for all the good times too many are in the past.

100%, and it’s a shame considering the investment in them. Ive never seen them take over a big game.  JHA’s best performance came week 17 against the tacks this past season, thanks dude big help. Look how dominate Jalen Carter was. Absolute BEAST. Verse and Fiske look to have a promising futures Will Anderson doing his thing. Lions were clearly missing Hutch, but he’s their game wrecker. Chiefs got Chris Jones, who always shows up in big games.
We should already have that type of game wrecker on our line, we spent the #1 and #7 picks on DEs. Spent a boat load of money to Armstead. Spent the 48th pick on Smith. Spent money on Hamilton. This D line is 100% underperforming given the resources spent.

Smith came on at the end of the year as you would expect from a rookie. Hamilton will not again be the player he was before the illness it seems. Armstead was out of position all year and likely on the downslope at his age. Jordan Jefferson is the guy who I hope takes the step this offseason. If Smith continues his trajectory and Jefferson develops we might have the 2 guys inside we need in the starting roles. Now to find the rotational guys who aren't just warm bodies with a pulse. All that depends on the new staff and scheme though, so first things first and fire Baalke. won't happen, but a man can dream can't he?

Add Mason Graham to this line and the dline would have elite potential.  Hopefully all those guys improve but we cant go into this season counting on it, if they do it will be icing on the cake.  If Graham is the top player on their board and he falls to pick 5 hopefully they sprint to the podium with his name on the card.

Yeah it's riskier and if it doesn't work then you'll give up yards as I said. But the 2 deep will keep it in front of them and the defense will have to go through a long, methodical drive in this fashion without messing up at all. If they can do it good for them. NFL teams do put up points. But I bet that over the course of that 10+ play drive we'd get a sack, or a turnover, or a penalty, or simply a bad drop or whatever.

You're gonna have to pick your poison one way or another, plus I think our personnel is built for it having Lloyd and Jones already adept at blitzing.

I assume Graham is now the guy they're targeting as DC, which scares me. He led the entire league in cover 0. Tons of exotic blitzes like I want, and also led the league in stunts, but also tons of big plays given up.

I dont see that happening.  What ties does he have with Graham?

Just that the rumor was Coen, Graham, and Saleh were the final 3 because Baalke wanted to hire Coen and then convince one of Graham or Saleh to stay as DC.

Saleh is back at 49ers as dc

The defense was pretty solid until the last one or two drives of the game. Then they folded like a cheap tent and lost us several games. They just don't have the big play clutch factor.

Coaches matter.

This defense had good players. And we [BLEEP] it all up with a trash DC.

For those that say "players not plays".

This defensive meltdown proves you have no idea what the heck you're talking about.

Lol, ok pookie. The defense has good players that didn't fit the scheme, like Tyson Campbell for instance. He's simply not a man corner. And Devon Lloyd, who played better than people think but isn't a true Mike. The defense also had outright bad players at CB2, SS, and Dline. You know, the places that kept getting gashed all year long? The simple fact is that the team didn't successfully convert from Caldwell's hybrid 34 to Neilsen's 425 scheme because Baalke [BLEEP] up free agency and the draft. I don't support how Neilsen worked the games this year, but he also didn't get players who fit what he does as a coach which is what they brought him in for. Players, not plays.

Not sure I'm feeling Aubrey Pleasant as the DC.

If he gets hired I'll support it... but why would Dan Campbell fire him as the secondary coach?

Personally, Patrick Graham is my pick...but maybe Liam wants to go in another direction.

FWIW - Coen says he wants his defense to be aggressive and play to the echo of the whistle even if it means a few penalties early in the season.

Two of the 5 DC interviews they have conducted were with guys who are known to call more blitzes than the league average. The other guys have less experience calling plays.

I just hope Coen hires a DC that will get enough respect from his LBs and Secondary that he can straight up call them on their bull [BLEEP] when they screw up and hold them accountable - seems like the last two guys didn't want to ruffle too many feathers or bruise too many egos

Coen talked about being honest with players about their mistakes and weaknesses, but that's just talk for now.
I hope the whole staff can get to that point quickly

I have a lot of fear that a first time DC won't know how to strategically dial up blizes, or get the most out of our Dline...or know which D Linemen aren't carrying their weight.

I've never had so many question marks about a team defensively.

Then again, we all thought that Ryan Nielson would be a step up.

LOL, as of today and Coen hasn't secured his DC, we as fans has no idea to which our D will look like in the 2025 NFL Season. Assistant coaching, Player personnel will change along with the scheme. Acquiring additional players (NFL Draft and FA) and releasing others will determine the look of our D. It's too early.

Time Will Tell.

It will be interesting to see how the new coaching staff evaluates the talent on the roster.
Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency.

1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

Learn from the great collapse of 2023.

Campanile is an intriguing hire for DC. I hope they can grab Udinski too for OC. Won't matter as much on OC since Coen is calling the plays.
