13 moves that destroyed Downtown Jacksonville

Quote:Here is another example of the inability of long term thinking.  The new Brooklyn area is coming along nicely.  This could be a catalyst to making the convention center more of an asset.  What does the city do?  The parking lots in front of the convention center are to become new HUD/Section 8 housing.  This is not how you revitalize a city.
The folks making those decisions have no desire to revitalize anything.

There is a large contingent that wants to ensure that Jacksonville does not revitalize itself, but we've covered that already.

This where I get lost in the local politics.  West Arlington decays, the Baymeadows area around I95 declines, and down town is a waste land.  All of this as the money and the people move to Clay County.  When it comes to this city the developers are pulling all of the strings.

(Sorry incomplete thought, trying to cook dinner for the family)

Unfortunately the strings being pulled are not benefiting the citizens of Duval County nor the future of the city of Jacksonville

I'd think most would prefer St John's to Clay nowadays (impossible to get through Orange Parking Lot during rush hour.)

It's also up to people in the decaying areas to get it right themselves.  You have to take pride, stand up and demand safety and clean neighborhoods from fellow residents.  Many prefer to flee than fix, or simply give up.

I get that it's not easy.  Most don't seem to have the effort and patience, especially today.  Again, with safer, cleaner options most simply choose to move if they can afford to.

Question, why does the city leadership allow the exodus, even encourage it?  As a city councilman of any district in Duval County how do these moves help you?

You can't prevent people from making their own decisions.

Their job is to encourage it not to happen.  Once government controls behavior then time to get rid of it.

No you can't however, you can give them viable alternative options.  This is what I don't get in how the city council is behaving.  It suggest to me that they are getting something in return for this mass exodus of tax payers to the surrounding counties.
