He's a former defensive end, was a defensive line coach for the 49ers when they had a dominant pass rush, and has experience as a defensive coordinator, albeit with an NFL Europe team.

God no. Tomsula wanted the head job before Harbaugh was hired, and there were periodic reports during (and after) Harbaugh that Tomsula was working behind the scenes to aggravate Harbaugh with an eye towards setting himself up as the head coach. Harbaugh's "reap what you sow" tweet was initially thought to be directed at Trent Baalke, but I've seen it theorized that it was instead a shot at Tomsula for actively undermining Harbaugh in an effort to get him forced out.
