Good for him.  Honestly, I'm not surprised.  With the way he started out his rookie season against Mariota to now being arguably the best rookie in his class, he has a very "short term" memory for a young QB. 

 

Also, Newton just wrapped up his MVP trophy.

I know that he is a very polarizing figure, but I feel very confident that Winston is going to have a fine career when it's all said and done. He has some growing up to do, but so does every 20 something year old.

Agree. Passing yard and TD numbers keep going up dramatically as time goes by.


30 TDs and nearly 4000yds are becoming close to "the norm".


12 QBs posted over 4000 yds (with 5 other QBs over 3800 and 3900 yds).


11 QBs posted 30 TDs or more (with 2 other QBs at 29 TDs). Heck, Dalton had 25 TDs and 3250 yds and missed almost 4 full games.


What used to be considered excellent passing numbers are now just about what should be expected.


45-50 TDs and 5250 yards are now "upper-echelon" and "elite" season totals. 3 QBs came REALLY close to 5000 yards this season alone.


To the topic of Winston:

As a rookie, yes, that's terrific. But a veteran QB should be expected to get around those totals these days.


Today's Norm's:

28 to 35 TDs

4000 to 4500 yds

Agree.  A decent starter should be expected to put up 3.8-4k yards and 25-30 TDs.

I did a quick number crunch about this and found out some interesting things.

 

Of every QB who started at least ten games this season (my count was 25), the average total Yards Passing was 3,876.7 yards, and 25.9 (call it 26?) Touchdowns. The Average Yards Passing per game of those QBs was 259.5 yards which if you multiplied that times 16 games turns out to be 4,151.5 yards.

 

What that tells me is that if you are even a passable QB in the League today, you are getting to 3,800 yards. I believe it was stated above, but there are 12 QBs in the League this season that threw for 4,000+ yards.
