He was drafted and listed as a linebacker.

Quote:Are you forgetting who we drafted this year? An outside linebacker who will be our next Leo. With Telvin Smith on one side and Dante Fowler on the other, OLB is not a dire need that must be addressed early in the draft. Paul Posluszny does not show any signs of going to another team, so we just need a backup in the middle too. How high would you want to draft a backup?

Quote:Fowler will play DE not OLB

For the typical 4 - 3 Under Defense, which is what Bradley and Babich run, the Defense lines up like this:

------------------R---R

-----Z--------------Q

------------Y-T-G-C-G-T----------X

-----------O-E---N-----T-L

----------------M----W

Where:

O - OTTO (Skuta) although he may line up inside of the Tight End (Y)

E - End (Odrick)

N - Noseguard (Miller)

T - Tackle (Marks / Alualu)

L - LEO (Fowler)

M - MIKE (Pozluszny)

W - WILL (Smith)

Note that this formation aligns via the Offense's "strength" which in this case is which side the Tight End lines up. T, L, and W are weakside players and O, E, N, and M are strongside.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

You make it too complicated. It is simply LDE, DT, DT, RDE on the line and Sam, Mike, and Will behind them in the 4-3 defense. In the 3-4, it is LDE, NT, RDE on the line and Leo, Sam, Mike, and Will linebackers.

Of course we already have our Leo now, so we would look elsewhere for a linebacker.

No, that's not correct either.

No, I didn't make it too complicated. I reflected the front seven of the Base Defense that the team runs. Look at the "Under" front in the picture below that is shown on the Left Hand side. That's the base set up of the 4-3 Defense withe the DE on the side away from the Tight End labeled as the LEO and the LB on the side with the Tight End as the OTTO. You can also think of it as the "Solid" front that is shown on the bottom right hand side, but I am under the impression that Bradley and Co. have never even heard of inside leverage on a Pass Receiver.

EDIT: If you have access to the "All 22" film of the Jacksonville Buffalo game, check out the alignment on Buffalo's second play of the game. It's pretty much exactly what I wrote above.

The reason that the Defense aligns like this is because it is known as a "gap control" Defense. The Defense is trying to make certain that every gap along the Offensive Line is accounted for. For an Offensive line that has one Center, two Guards, two Tackles and one Tight End that means it has seven gaps. this alignment puts a Defensive player in each gap along the Offenses "blocking surface".

That is the definition of 4-3 and 3-4 defenses. All of the other stuff is just part of our specific defensive scheme.

If he is BAP you pick him. Always BAP.
Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency.

1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

Learn from the great collapse of 2023.
